Danny Drinkwater admits his Chelsea stint was a 'business move gone wrong'

Remember Danny Drinkwater? In addition to having a fantastic name, Drinkwater was a vital member of Leicester City’s miracle Premier League title squad in 2015-16, earning some England caps in the process.

Drinkwater made such an impression, in fact, that Chelsea came calling and splashed out £35 million for him in 2017.

But Drinkwater’s time at Chelsea was, to put it mildly, not great.

In five seasons with the club, Drinkwater made just 23 appearances in all competitions while being loaned out to Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and finally Reading in the most recent season.

Drinkwater also had some legal troubles. In 2019 his driver’s license was suspended for 20 months for drunk driving, and later in the year he missed several weeks of action after a fight outside a nightclub.

With his contract now set to expire, Drinkwater’s time at Chelsea is finally coming to an end and on Thursday, the 32-year-old posted an honest assessment of his time at Stamford Bridge on Instagram.

“My time at Chelsea has come to an end… actually feels really strange writing this,” he wrote.

“Me, the club and fans are hugely disappointed with the outcome there is no doubt about that.

“Injuries, how I have been treated, mistakes I have made, issues of the pitch, lack of game time… the list of excuses could be endless but I would not and can not change what’s happened.

“I’m going to look at positives over the past five years, I have played with great players, coached by awesome managers, worked with some brilliant staff, met some fantastic people, lived in some beautiful places, travelled the world and won some more silverware.

“Footballs a fantastic sport but this for both parties was a business move gone wrong, it’s as black and white as that.

“To the Chelsea fans I apologise for how this has turned out I would of loved for u to see me at my best in that shirt doing what I love.”
