Lenny Holmes steals the show
Drummer Jerome "Big Foot" Brailey was never one of the major players in the P-Funk universe, but he did co-write their monster Parliament hit Give Up the Funk. After the death of Glenn Goins and finishing work on the sole Quazar album, he formed his own band called Mutiny.

On their debut, Brailey spends way too much time slamming George Clinton. But he's a top-notch drummer and proves himself to be a pretty good singer, producer, and arranger.

Big Foot and bassist Ray Carter build many tight rhythms throughout this album. Fellow fringe P-Funk member Darryl Dixon provides some tasty sax and does the horn arrangements.

But the real find here is one Lenny Holmes who co-wrote five of the eight tunes. Fans of guitar-driven funk are gonna wonder why they've never heard of him before. Holmes' playing is kind of muted and slightly buried in the mix, but he grabs my attention on track after track and won't let go.

Holmes' guitar on Go Away and What More give the album a strong start. Weak lyrics insulting Clinton detract from Lump and Funk 'n' Bop.

Burning Up is another solid track with driving horns and more hot playing from Holmes. The underwater theme of Voyage to the Bottom of the P might have made for a nice addition to Motor Booty Affair. Still more smoking guitar from Lenny Holmes.

Album highlight Everytime You Come Around is a sweet ballad with very soulful singing from Brailey, and Holmes' tasteful, understated playing reminds me of Ernie Isley.

Nice synth on Everytime and closer Romeo courtesy of Nat Lee (who did session work for Teddy Pendergrass and Evelyn Champagne King).

Good debut from Brailey and I can't say enough about Holmes: B-

nada de inovador, nada de ousadia, mas o Funk tocado nesse disco é avassalador! suíngue de guitarra acompanhado pelo groove do baixo e pela bateria bem quadradinha, com alguns lampejos de destaque de solo e vocais. discaço!

Another p-funk splinter group, this time made up of folk who left the mothership on bad terms with George - the good Dr Funkenstein here re-christened as 'Lump'. The Mamahip here is choc-full of p-funk grooves though, and whilst there is no real originality its every bit as infectious as much of the Parliament-funkadelic material. Fave tune is probably 'Funk N Bop' - all p-funk bass and horns. Cool.

wow, it's been so long since i've heard this! i picked this up after burning
thru the Bootsy LPs and looking for more hardcore funk. and the funk cuts
really, really, really rock. i can't recommend them enough for anyone into
the whole late 70s P-Funk thang. however, like Bootsy's LPs, it's damn
hard to get through the ballads (at least it was for me). i dubbed the funky
stuff onto a cassette somewhere (probably at the end of a Bootsy mixtape)
and have not heard the others since probably 1980.
