Notes

No Count Sarah is a 1958 studio album by the American jazz singer Sarah Vaughan.
The title refers to the fact that Vaughan was accompanied by the Count Basie Orchestra, but without Count Basie.
Reviewing the album for Allmusic, Scott Yanow gave it a four-and-a-half stars rating and called it "one of the best of all Sarah Vaughan recordings.
Highly recommended". It features "astounding vocalese" from Vaughan on tracks including "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "No 'Count Blues".

            Strangely the cat # is higher than for 'Close to you' which is from 1960. This issue-UK-has 'Recording first published 1959' printed on the back cover. Interestingly the cover shown has the same kind of undulations as our copy which may indicate a slight printer production problem ?! The double matrices on each dead wax area is presumably 1. original USA master and 2. with EMI/Mercury matrix . Additional there are EMI stamper codes 1 R & 1 N on our copy-and probably also on other UK contemporary pressings.

              Sarah Vaughan recorded in a variety of settings while with Mercury and EmArcy in the 1950s but this particular matchup with the Count Basie Orchestra (pianist Ronnell Bright substitutes for Count, thus the title) is pure jazz. During the classic encounter, Sassy fits in comfortably with the band, whether singing lyrics (such as "Darn That Dream," "Cheek to Cheek" or "Doodlin'") or scatting sensuously on "No Count Blues." The wit and constant swing (in addition to the spontaneous creativity), makes this one of the best of all Sarah Vaughan recordings.
