Why AoS Vanguard Boxes Were Rebranded to Spearhead
The Cities of Sigmar and the Flesh-eater Courts were the two latest factions in Warhammer Age of Sigmar to receive new miniatures. And with two new Spearheads* coming out, you can build a solid force for either with just one box. * The new name for Vanguard boxes.
As of 2024, Games Workshop has rebranded these bundle boxes from Vanguard to Spearhead in order to match the new game type in Age of Sigmar 4th Edition. The Spearhead force of each faction is made from a single box, and all the Vanguard boxes available on the market will eventually be rebranded as Spearhead boxes.
Vanguard / Spearhead Box Set Description
AoS Vanguard boxes are a fantastic entry point into playing a new army or expanding your current collection. Each box contains a starter selection of miniatures, providing a solid foundation for a playable force. These boxes are designed with both newcomers and seasoned hobbyists in mind and offer decent values (generally).
Within each box, you’ll discover an assortment of finely detailed miniatures representing the various factions of the AoS universe. From the stalwart Stormcast to the sinister forces of Chaos to all the Destruction and Death forces, there’s something to suit every taste and playstyle.
On top of getting the miniatures, 4th Edition has a self-contained ruleset to play games with nothing more than these boxes. The smaller-style games let you play with your new miniatures, learn the basics of AoS, and get ready to expand your army for full battles! If you’re looking to get into the game, this is a great way to do it!
Overall, AoS Vanguard boxes are a fantastic buy for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the game. Their diverse selection of miniatures, new game modes, and good value make them the perfect choice for building and expanding your AoS army.
Games of Age of Sigmar Spearhead (Separate Game Mode)
GW released new 4th Edition AoS Spearhead faction rules for the corresponding boxes, just like they did for the Warhammer 40k Combat Patrols for starter games.
- The new rules will let you play games after buying a single Spearhead box.
- The Spearhead boxes will come with different rules, warscrolls, and objectives.
- Spearhead is a stand-alone game that can serve as a great primer for AoS’s full-scale battles.
- The smaller size of the game makes it ideal for a kitchen or coffee table.
- The Spearhead force of each faction is made from a single box, and all the Vanguard boxes available in the market will be rebranded as Spearhead boxes.
- Spearhead forces possess units with the REINFORCEMENTS keyword, which enables them to be resurrected on the battlefield even after they have been destroyed.
- The units in Spearhead generally have the same attributes and weapon profiles as their Age of Sigmar equivalents
- In Spearhead, the Bolt of Tzeentch spell has been simplified into a simple ability.
Overall, the release of the Spearhead rules for Age of Sigmar gives players a new and exciting way to play the game, especially for those who are just starting.
The streamlined rules, smaller game sizes, and self-contained boxes make it an accessible and convenient option for players who want to get some gaming in without committing to a full army.
Where To Get The AoS Spearhead Rules
The Skaventide Starter set includes a 144-page hardback book called “Spearhead: Fire and Jade.” This book contains all the essential rules needed to play, including the Core Rules, Spearhead rules, the Fire and Jade battle plan, and complete printed rules for every Spearhead army currently available.
Additionally, it features rules for the Sons of Behemat and introduces two new Spearheads crafted from models in the Skaventide boxed set.

Expand the dread territory of the Soulblight Dynasties with a vanguard box containing 29 miniatures. This bite-sized battalion is led by a vainglorious Vampire Lord, 20 Deathrattle Skeletons, five Blood Knights, and three monstrous Vargheists.
Honestly, this is a pretty balanced box without too much of any one thing. So, you can use this as a decent base force and sort of build it any way you want. You’ll want to add some more characters to really punch up your power and command options.

Ensure the tithe is collected on time with Vanguard: Ossiarch Bonereapers, which contains a Mortisan Soulreaper, five Kavalos Deathriders, 20 Mortek Guard, and a Gothizzar Harvester to put your constructs back together should they fall in battle.
This doesn’t have the greatest value overall, but again, only $33.50 is taken up by a character in value, so you do get a lot of troops. If you are just starting the army or need the minis inside, it will save you cash.

1 | Mortisan Soulreaper | $34 |

Seraphon Vanguard Box:

At the forefront of this tide of teeth is a mighty Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur. These savage and belligerent generals are covered with the scars of battles past, and have managed to bend a predatory Carnosaur to their will. You can also build him as a Saurus Scar-Veteran, or as a Skink Oracle on Troglodon, which can launch corrosive spittle at their foes. With their sturdy scales and robust celestite shields, Saurus Warriors are a living anvil who hold the line and break enemy charges. In return they lash out with clubs, spears, and their own ferocious jaws, and no, they don’t care if their target is a putrescent servant of Nurgle or a rock-skinned Troggoth.
The final piece of the Vanguard is a unit of hulking Kroxigor. These lumbering brutes are monstrously striking, wielding weapons that can easily crush every bone in an Orruk’s body. They can alternatively be built as Kroxigor Warspawned, marked for war by the god Sotek.
Honestly, this is on the lower end of the value we’ve seen for Vanguard boxes. However, if you need every miniature inside, you basically get the Warriors for free. You don’t save any cash if you don’t plan on using everything in the box. If you want a Carnosaur, then this is worth the buy; if you don’t, you should probably pass.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
1 | Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur | $90 |
10 | Saurus Warriors | $62.50 |
3 | Kroxigor | $62.50 |

Spearhead: Flesh-eater Courts comprises 15 miniatures, including an Abhorrant Archregent and his loyal complement of 10 Cryptguard. Three Morbheg Knights bound into combat alongside a horrifying Varghulf Courtier, their frenzied assault a grim parody of a rousing charge.
This box is lackluster, even at the $145 price. It doesn’t save you that much and has similar models to the army box. Especially when you compare it to the Cities of Sigmar box, it doesn’t seem too good value-wise…
Models | Unit Name | Value |

Spearhead: Stormcast Eternals is loaded with miniatures, representing a balanced fighting force out of the box – and a way to add a powerful leader or some valuable reinforcements to your roster.
Led by Yndrasta the Celestial Spear, this boxed set contains 16 plastic Citadel Miniatures, including a Stormstrike Chariot pulled by a pair of Gryph-Chargers. Bulking out the set are a unit each of Vanquishers and Annihilators, and a Knight-Vexillor to proudly carry the banners of the Stormcast Eternals into battle, ablaze with the glorious light of celestial energies.
This has the biggest value of any of the boxes, so if you want some Stormcast models, this is totally worth it! However, if you have access to the Dominion Starter box, which still seems to be on the market at a discount, that is a way better deal than this.
Models | Unit Name | Value |
1 | Yndrasta the Celestial Spear | $45 (based on other characters) |
