What can be said about a man I have idolised for the past number of years and who I share an affinity with pertaining to the art of television presenting? Simply, bravo. This book carries on where Booky Wooky left off as we find ourselves in all too familiar territory since the life of Russell Brand has become a staple of the tabloid feeding frenzy. Much of the material and jokes are taken directly from his Scandalous tour but this makes it no less weighty on the page and allows the reader to see the construction of many of his gags, most of which revolve around his ability to say or do the "wrong" thing.....from the MTV Awards where he called Bush a "retarded cowboy" (which Bush should consider a compliment) to the notorious Sachs-gate affair that more than anything highlights the ridiculous nature of a consumer culture consumed by the travails of our celebrity brethren. Russell cuts through the crazy vitriolic diatribes against him with dandy applomb, particularly in his repsonses to some of the death threats received following his MTV gig. All in all it's a wonderfully written book, with time taken to consider the flow of the narrative, allowing it to be constructed around the frame-work of his stand-up material. What is clearly apparent is that Brand is an incredibly talented man who carries an aura with him wherever he goes. I have been fortunate enough to have met him and felt completely enthralled in his company, despite me being a heterosexual male whose conquests have often taken on a "Russell" quality. Women do throw themselves at him and I often wondered how he would eventually settle for one woman. Enter stage left our heroine Katy. I can only hope a third book will be forthcoming, detailing his burgeoning Hollywood career, his marriage and more insights into life as a recovering addict. This is a book which should appeal to fan and philistine alike and can be used as a source of inspiration. His world of wacky and anarchic humour remains his own, despite his sobriety - he has learned to trust himself to be viewed as a sober entity and has embraced life. I have now given up all alcohol as a result of reading this book and it is my hope to fulfil many of my dreams as I begin to trust in my own personality and humour, without the need for outside stimulants.
