Normally, sitcom-to-film adaptations are a disaster - a lazy compendium of stock catchphrases, calculated crowd-pandering and a lack of whatever spark the source material once had. Apocalypse is nothing like this. It's an intentional inversion of all of those things and a mind-twisting existential conundrum to boot. The League of Gentlemen themselves are depicted as a team of exhausted, frustrated writers, on their last legs of creativity, doomed to forever repeat the same dismal gags. Their characters are a literal manifestation of this; a tragic bunch of "one-joke" grotesqueries who, here, wrestle with the notion of their own existence and the concepts of free will (which, as fictional characters, they fear they do not have). An excellent spin-off from the cult black comedy series with Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss.
Even for fans of the cult series, this seems to polarize. I think it’s appropriate that such a weird show would have a weird movie. Admirers are a cult within a cult.
The plot is very meta, concerning the fictitious characters learning they are, in fact, fictitious. The writers of the show are trying to write something new, which is nothing less than a cataclysmic event for the population of Royston Vasey. Naturally, they set out to force the writers into creating new material for them, so they won’t die. Then characters from the new script they’re writing find out, and have some concerns of their own. It reminds me of Terry Gilliam’s early stuff. Strange and absurd.

This sucks. It’s amazing. It’s a meta masterpiece. It’s just dumb references. It’s a stupid idea. It’s the best thing I’ve ever heard of. It doesn’t make any sense. It transcends genre. It’s stunning, it’s funny, it’s moving, it’s surreal, it’s mind bending. It’s the worst film I’ve ever seen.
Rather unfairly criticized by fans at the time, the League's first and, so far, only feature film wisely chooses not to pander to those who only want to hear "YOU'RE MY WIFE NOW" endlessly repeated for 90 minutes, and instead expands upon the experimental approach of the third season, focusing on only a few select (and not very iconic) characters and opting for a lighter, more sympathetic story of growth and redemption, a big departure from the monstrously black humor of the series. An underrated favorite, worthy of more attention from both fans and newcomers.
Not the biggest fan of the show but this was kicking around the shop for 25p. Well worth a gamble.
I like apocalypse films for the most part, and then to have some meta humour thrown in. Actors playing themselves, playing their characters, playing their characters playing themselves. Love all that.
