having grown up with pinoy teleseryes na may ganitong klaseng setup, hindi na ko nagtaka sa part na may matapobreng karakter pero despite that, sobrang nakakapanibago yung absence of cliché selosan tropes between the two kids bc i kind of expected that coming… also ambabait ng amo nakakataba ng pusong mapanood lalo na yung mga wholesome subplot that just hits me—yung tinabihan ni ruby si lola toots at hinawakan siya nung gabi, the SKEECHERS scene, the crucifix necklace scene, the sampalok.. ahh just so WHOLESOME. this is turning me to a maricelian
that classic SKEECHERS scene is something that can be so personal. one of the best Filipino movies and Maricel Soriano's best performance.
Inang Yaya has a brillant screenplay with terrific performances from Maricel Soriano and the two kids. All the subplots - the "Skeechers" shoes, Lola Toots being checked on by Ruby, and the assumed stolen necklace - all contributed to the heartwarming value of this film. Its rare we get to see this kind of Pinoy movie.
Thoughts after rewatch:
- argh. Product placements
- Norma’s salary is just the same as a branded rubber shoes (almost P4K)?? In 2006??
- so happy with the casting of relative unknowns for the kids’ roles
Maricel Soriano birthed the term Mothered, and this movie takes that to new heights. I haven’t had a filipino movie make me cry this much since I watched Anak in high school.
The Skeetchers scene hit so close to home as someone whose family lost everything when she was a pre-teen who went to a very anti-poor, highly pretentious private school.
The sampaloc scene and Ruby checking on Lola Toots’ breathing felt like a stab to the heart.
The humanity of each character was just perfect. You could see all of their internal struggles without the need for dialogue.
I loved every moment of this movie. They don’t make child stars like Tala Santos and Erika Oreta anymore.
Kung palubog ang barko, ibibigay ko ang buhay ko, masagip ko lang sila pareho
PLS I SOBBED
“Kung palubog ang barko, ibibigay ko ang buhay ko, masagip ko lang sila pareho.”
MOTHERED SO HARD LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY. Napakawholesome, grabe iyak ko.
I had an aunt who took care of me since I was a baby because my parents had to work. I called her my Mama. When my parents would pick me up from their house, I would hide and refuse to come home. Then, my parents would come back and pick me up when I was already asleep. I promised to Mama that when I grow, up I would help fix their house. Mama did not live long enough for that but I will keep my promise.
After she died, I had this fear I would forget her voice. It was the best voice in the world. She would sing "Top of the Word" at karaoke and refuse to have…
