The first half of this is an entertaining yarn about two jewel thieves (one posing as a detective, one posing as an heiress) each trying to steal this wealthy older woman's jewels and flirting with one another the whole way. Then inexplicably the movie turns into a war movie....Clark Gable steals the uniform of a military man to stay ahead of Johnny Law and ends up finding himself fighting invading Japanese on the coast of China.
It's like they had two different scripts lying around and tried to merge them together. I can kinda see how it made sense on paper. He's an international thief trying not to get caught but boy the two halves of this one could not…
Absolutely bizarre picture. It transform from a delightfully breezy film about two jewel thieves (Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell) going for the same priceless necklace to almost a hangout lovers on the run in a ship and in Hong Kong to a war film where Gable wins the Victoria Cross. Luckily, Gable and Russell have more than enough star power and charisma to pad the sudden shift in the final third.
I can’t imagine They Met in Bombay not being much better if the war third was just replaced with a tag team heist in Hong Kong or another exotic locale. It was 1941, though, so war picture it must be.
For the most part, Clarence Brown's sound films seem to have mastered the quality of being perfectly mediocre.
They Met in Bombay is fine, but it never sets itself up to take any risks or exceed expectation. Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell are well-paired in a film that starts out as a semi-comedy and ends up a semi-war story. The camerawork and action sequences are good, the performances are likable, the chemistry is believable . . . but the parts don't ever add up to anything greater than the whole. My impression of Brown, after seeing a handful of his later films now, is that he's a "safe" director--competent and able to turn in a profit, but (with a few…
I don't really think this movie knows what it wants to be; it doesn't feel like there's a consistent tone to this and the film does seem to struggle as it undergoes those shifts. Throughout, though, it is a lot stronger because of the strength of Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell, as two jewel thieves that start off as both chasing after the same necklace. There's also a surprisingly strong performance from Jessie Ralph as the Duchess of Beltravers, the owner of the necklace in question, and to some extent I wish the movie had focused more on the initial heist if only to give Ralph more screen time.
As the movie advances, featuring a segment with Peter Lorre as…
Entertaining swindler story which turns into World War II action with Clark Gable & Rosalind Russell carrying the half-baked script solely on their star power. Takes a lot to swallow the plot, but not their personalities. Polished production must be said, but they should have worked harder on lighthearted script, both for laughs and for drama. Still, if you're after some pure escapism They Met in Bombay (1941) might not be a bad choice.
I just wanted Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell to be sexy and live a carefree life of crime, but no, there had to be morality and…the military? Did not expect to see Gable lobbing grenades when I started this film about jewel thieves, but life (and old Hollywood screenwriting) is funny that way.
This movie was...weird??? It started out as a comedy about two jewel thieves and ended with some war stuff (it was during WWII, after all). I liked the pairing of Clark Gable with Rosalind Russell, I thought they went very good together, but the movie itself wasn't anything special.
wtf it went from a criminal film to a war film. i can’t believe i had to watch another gable film in roz’s filmography
