About the Episode

Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) and Joyce (Renee Bailey) are thrilled to receive their red cardigans. Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) presents Joyce with the Violet Albany Prize, which is given to the East London midwife who qualifies with the highest marks in her exams. Shelagh (Laura Main) has arranged for everyone to have their photograph taken for the Gazette outside Nonnatus House.

Whilst the team have their photograph taken, an apprehensive Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew (Olly Rix) pull up – the weight of the world on their shoulders. Matthew is stunned to learn a Bailiff is taking back his car and the couple are publicly humiliated.

Trixie hasn’t been sleeping well and confides in Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann) who prescribes sleeping pills for the short-term.

Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) and Rosalind give a talk at Kingsley Toy Factory on female reproductive health and contraception. The all-female workforce is rowdy and Rosalind suspects one of the younger women is concealing a pregnancy, but that is not all she is hiding.

It’s October and Fred (Cliff Parisi) has ordered turnips, which can be hollowed out with a candle in it. However, he miscalculates the order, and a lorry unloads a massive pile of turnips in front of the shop. Luckily Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) comes up with a plan to use the abundance of turnips.

Matthew is determined to redeem himself and get them out of their mess so follows a lead on an opportunity with an old school friend. Although this may be their lifeline, Trixie is hurt that he is making pivotal decisions without her.

At the maternity home, Miss Higgins receives a mysterious call of enquiry. Joyce is unsettled by this but does not share her anxiety with her friends. Later, she walks into Nonnatus House to find Sylvester Warren (Benjamin Cawley) enjoying tea with the other residents of Nonnatus House. The team are delighted that Joyce now has a cousin living in London. Joyce smiles brightly, but she is clearly unsettled by Sylvester’s arrival.
