The official trailer for Oliver Stone‘s Snowden movie has debuted online.
Open Road released a teaser for the film last year, without any new footage, but this is the first extended look at Stone’s upcoming film, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
The film is set to hit theaters on Sept. 16 after being pushed back twice from its original release dates of Dec. 25, 2015, and May 13 of this year. In addition to Gordon-Levitt, Snowden stars Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans and Joely Richardson. Woodley plays Snowden’s girlfriend, while Quinto plays journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Stone directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), basing it on two books, The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man, by journalist Luke Harding; and the novel Time of the Octopus, by Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena.
Related Stories
The film is being produced by Stone’s longtime partner, Moritz Borman, as well as Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle.
Harding’s book deals with reports based on Snowden’s disclosures in The Guardian, while Kucherena’s fictional story focuses on an American whistleblower who, after being threatened by his government and waiting for a decision on his request for Russian asylum, spends weeks at the Moscow airport.
The trailer begins with footage of Gordon-Levitt’s Snowden training with the army. But injuries to both of his legs lead him to be discharged.
Snowden is shown being tasked to work on a secret project for the NSA and observing, alongside a colleague, what looks like a private moment. When he asks how that’s possible, he learns that private information (cellphones, emails, texts) is being searched.
Later he’s heard saying, “The NSA is really tracking every cell phone in the world…There’s something going on inside the government that’s really wrong and I can’t ignore it.”
The film follows Snowden as he tries to make public the information and data he’s obtained and as he’s being pursued.
The trailer ends with him saying, “They’re going to come for me. They’re going to come for all of you too.” The footage also demonstrates that Gordon-Levitt has altered his voice to sound more like Snowden.
Not long after the trailer was posted, the actual Snowden responded in a couple of tweets.
For two minutes and thirty nine seconds, everybody at NSA just stopped working. https://t.co/OLjCV6wkGp
