Torey Peck (Patty McCormack) is a very pretty but mischievous 12-year-old girl who lives in a small American town.
She is not interested in “girlie things” such as makeup and dresses and loves her life as a tomboy. She likes doing “guy stuff” like playing sport and refuses to grow up – preferring to remain a tomboy rather than face the world as a young lady.
Stories follow the events in Torey’s life as she enjoys doing what she does, but deep down knowing that – like her equally pretty girlfriend, Francesca (Reba Waters) – she will one day abandon her baseball mitt and fishing rod for a dress and a date with a boy.
Torey’s parents are research physicist Steve Peck (Wendell Corey) and his wife, Jennifer, (Marsha Hunt). She also has a seven-year-old brother called Roger (Ray Ferrell).
Her other school friends include Trudy (Bernadette Withers) and Lois (Trudy Ziskind).
The series premiered on 5 May 1959. Torey opened and closed each episode, serving as the narrator with a set-up and a wrap-up.
Sponsors included Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Geritol, Devarex, Serutan and Sominex).
