The Fix (Memory Man Series Book 3) Kindle Edition
Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution-style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself.
Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter -- a family man with a successful consulting business -- and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.
Enter Harper Brown. An agent of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she orders Decker to back off the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it.
But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security. Critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government -- or worse, an international terrorist group -- and an attack may be imminent.
Decker's never been one to follow the rules, especially with the stakes so high. Forced into an uneasy alliance with Agent Brown, Decker remains laser focused on only one goal: solving the case before it's too late.

About the author
David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")
David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. The feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 48 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.
David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy programs across the United States.

Two events made him who he is. First, a devastating brain injury on the football field that left him with perfect recall. He remembers everything he has seen, heard or experienced in any way.
The second event, the murder of his wife and daughter now remain as vivid in his remarkable memory as the day it happened.
The writing is excellent. The plotting is excellent. The characters are believable and and well drawn. The stories are complex page turners.
Start at the beginning with Memory Man. You won't be sorry. I repeat. What's not to like?
I should mention that I am a cheapskate - I often use Kindle Unlimited to select books as it is cheaper. Only when it is likely to be a great book will I spring $15 for a book like this. I was not disappointed.
What this book shares with the previous two books is a well conceived plot, unknowable twists and turns, while still remaining plausible for someone who has essentially a perfect memory (which the protagonist has, due to a freak accident) . He (Baldacci) also does a good job linking and yet separating these books for people who read either in order or out of order.
I hate books that don't maintain internally consistency and Baldacci delivers the goods. The plot in The Fix was quite complicated, seemingly starting as a simple murder / suicide and broadening in to a much more convoluted (yet plausible!!) story.
Taking in events from real news, The Fix was up to the minute.
What sold the story to me though, was the heart and soul of the characters. They seemed like real people to me... Characters with dreams, desires, who made mistakes, and lamented what they said or did to each other. This was the aspect of the book that took a good story and made it great... character development.
I enjoyed it immensely and if you are into who done it's, then I think you will too.
Something I love doing, is looking online at upcoming books. I have so many pre ordered. I saw The Fix one day on iBook’s. I read what it was about. I did not see anything that said you had to read previous books to follow it.
Then, my mom one day tells me she found two books for us to read. You see, we started each getting a book and reading. So we can chat about it. Anyway, the book was The Last Mile. I read it, then saw that is was a series and that I had pre ordered one of the books in it.
I next got us each Memory Man. I read right after Last Mile. I love both of those books.
You read about Amos Decker. A man who had a chance at something, but, after one quick moment, lost his chance. Then, he loses two things that are much more important. He starts to fall apart. We see him at his lowest. Through actions that happen, he starts to get his life back together. All while dealing with wounds from the past and trying to live as a different person, then he previously was.
The first two books were amazing. I got so into each of the characters. The writer does a great so of showing cause and effect. You get some story, move on and come back to things that you read, which have a way of continuing when the time is right.
They are two of the best books I have read.
Then, I read the third one. As sad as I am to say, the third, was by far, my least favorite.
First, there seems to be a lot of things happening, just so there can be things happening. Some of the stuff you read and want to go somewhere, but it never does. It is like filler.
Then, the story gets to a point. I told myself, I sure hope this story, does not get too big for what it is. Sadly, I feel as if it did. There is something that happens that just, honestly, it made me feel like I had started reading a continuation of the Decker series, then started reading a different story. It did not at all fit with the first two books.
After that, the end is one of the worst endings I have read. It just comes out of nowhere. Now, it does have to do with things that happen. But, it just feels like an afterthought. Like the main thing in the story, overshadows the ending. Then, after the ending, there are a few chapters. They made things even worse.
Finally, there are SO many things that happened in this story, that had no conclusion. It just left me feeling like I had read something that was incomplete.
I will get every book in this series. I already have two other books, from another series of his. I got them for my mom as well. Great writer, great story, just did not feel like it was put together well.
