      Critics Consensus

Mary Poppins Returns relies on the magic of its classic forebear to cast a familiar -- but still solidly effective -- family-friendly spell.

Danielle Gensburg Chicago Reader As wonderful as the original, telling a new story with equally important lessons about family, love, and hope. Feb 21, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine For first-time Mary Poppins viewers, especially young ones, the messages in Mary Poppins Returns about seeing the world through curious eyes will be refreshing and fun. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian It may seem unfair to compare the two movies, yet this sequel, with its deliberate nods to the original, is made to encourage just that. I think it's what the filmmakers expect us to do. Rated: 3/5 Jan 18, 2019 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film Blunt gives the character a little bit of a different spine, thus making the character her own. Rated: A- Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) Mary Poppins Returns is no exception to the lack of creativity in current cinema , it is a late remake disguised as a sequel, which reiterates the sequential development of the first and successful installment Mary Poppins (1964)... Rated: 6/10 Jan 27, 2024 Full Review Ash Jefferson But Why Tho? A Geek Community I was incredibly disappointed with Mary Poppins Returns. It could’ve been something really special, but instead it focused too much on playing to the nostalgia of the original film, while completely missing why that film was so special in the first place. Darren G I think this is absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!! I like the animated wolf badger and weasel, but I'm hoping Wolf badger and weasel will get recast, and it'll replace old cast to new cast like Hugh Grant, Brendon Gleason, and David Oleyowo. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Cole S I have to say the first Mary Poppins confused me so much but I love in this that it was all explained!I also ADORE Lin-Manuel Miranda in the role of Jack the lamplighter, his charm really expresses the role and his accent is great imo!Emily Blunt is also a wonderful Mary Poppins.'A Cover is not the book' is so iconic aswell as the show-stealer 'Trip a little light fantastic' Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Jeff M They don't make 'em like this anymore! This sequel to the 1964 classic is pure joy from start to finish, although I think it will appeal more to the nostalgia in us older folks than the Teen Titan tykes of today. Emily Blunt's casting is perfection, creating a Mary that feels a bit more Maggie Smith than Julie Andrews. It is a fantastic movie star performance, and I hope she is recognized by the Academy. It's a hair bit long, but some of the musical numbers are sheer magic, and the live action/animated sequence is one of my favorites of the year. A special shout out to Whishaw who in many ways holds this film together. One of the best movies of the year! And no - I don't think you necessarily have to see the original to enjoy this one. But it wouldn't hurt. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Bo L I think that it is sad to see such a good potential go to waste, i think that the movie should have more references to the first movie, Mary Poppins in this movie feels nothing like the one from the first movie. The only thing that i liked is the story even though it is a little too dark for my liking compared to the first. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Lara B Not good. Don't try to re-create and add onto to an iconic film like this. The only high note was the return of Duck Van Dyke Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review BoyofPlenty At the start I hated that Lin Manuel Miranda was Jack, but he kinda killed it with Lovely London Sky. I may like this one more than the original Mary Poppins, though I'm not ready to make that argument yet. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
