This may be a dumb question. But, I truly want to submit to God so here it goes.
Is putting on sackcloth and ashes a literal thing we need to do? If so what garment is considered sackcloth and where exactly do I get ashes?
If not (which is what I suspect) can someone please explain the metaphorical meaning to me ? I know it has to do with repentance and mourning, Daniel did it, King Hezikiah did it, and the two witnesses will along with many more.
I want this! I am dedicated to being and doing what God wants me to do in order to disciple others and get closer to YAHWAH.
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

The sacrifices to God are a broken and contrite heart. These He will not despise. Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart

The fear of man brings a snare but those who trust in the Lord will be safe. One of the things traditional Judaism in Bible times and today is add non-biblical requirements to repentance including works and other things. Remember without the shedding of Blood there is no forgiveness of sin. Works cannot bring about forgiveness nor almsgiving prayer or other disciplines. If you have trusted in Christ for forgiveness of sins and as Lord/Savior, then it’s a matter of coming before God and confession and repent . If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Don’t let satan or his designs deceive you into a counterfeit repentance or salvation by works 😊 2Chronicles 7:14.

Yacob (James) 2:20-26 says our works are accompanied by our faith. Abraham believed, AND obeyed. YHWH gave us His Torah (instructions) to know how to follow Him. Even though sackcloth and ashes is not in Torah, and does not make one righteous, if your spirit is telling you to look deeper into things that were done by our ancestors (Daniel chapter 9, or Mordecai in Esther 4) then don't let any man stop you. YHWH is a Rewarder of those who are zealous for Him! Think of how He honored Pinchas. (Numbers 25) The Christian realm has long taught to ignore Torah, and suggest that YHWH changed His mind. Yeshua's own words, "If you keep my commands, you will stay in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and stay in His love." John 15:9-10 Also see Rev 14:12
Sackcloth was like burlap, plain and uncomfortable to wear. Ashes represent purification. Baptism is a physical representation of becoming new. We are still physical, and we do physical works in our faith. Only YHWH knows our heart, and whether or not our works are sincere. Shaul /Paul said not to let anyone judge our observances (Col 2:16) YHWH will be our Judge, in Messiah's Name, HalleluYah!

Faith without works is dead. Good works to me should be the fruit of repentance not the basis of it. Yeshua said I come not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance

Yes, sometimes I wear sackloth and ashes but it's more to just humble myself before the Almighty. He said He desires a broken spirit and contrite heart. If you literally want to do it, I bought burlap from Walmart (it's a scratchy potato sack material) and I got glued it together and made a dress out of it, cut arm holes, etc. I have just burned paper to ashes and wiped it on my face. Again though, ask God, I don't want to lead you in any way that He isn't. I don't believe it's necessary, I think it's between you and Him.

I do not know Numbers 25, (I have always been told what the Bible says and am just now digging deep into reading so that I KNOW what the Bible says, I will be reading Numbers soon. Thank you again. And I agree, sometimes I need a reminder that God is faithful and LOVES us. I have heard Tanakh be dismissed by well-meaning gentile believers . Faith without works is dead. The Torah and Tanakh are not the same. Torah is Gen through Deut, these are YHWH'S Instructions. The Tanakh is the entire "Old Testament". The Prophets back up the Torah. The rest is writings that are poetic and historical. Studying the Torah and Prophets is the way to learn who YHWH our God is. Yeshua our Messiah walked in Torah perfectly, therefore Torah is the root of learning who Yeshua is and was, which advances our sanctification. All praise to our Lord for giving us His Heart penned on paper for us!
