Nearly 50 years after its release, “Barracuda” remains one of Heart’s most recognizable songs. While chatting on today’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, lead singers (and sisters) Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson looked back on the “gross” man who inspired the hit track.

The year was 1977 and Heart was opening up for The Kinks in Detroit, according to Ann, who said it wasn’t unusual for “baby bands” like the musicians to have their dressing rooms filled with “all these industry types” after the shows.

“They could be pretty sleazy,” she said. “There was this one guy in particular who had this pornographic watch on — like, one of those watches, like, if you move your hand, it’ll do something sexy.”

She continued, “He asked me, ‘Hey, Annie! How’s your lover?’ And I went, ‘Oh, Michael’s fine. He’s right over there.’ Because I was with Michael Fisher at the time. And he said, ‘No, your sister. Your sister. Your lover.'”

The man was insinuating that Ann and her real-life sister and bandmate Nancy were together romantically, which left Ann furious.

“It was a lot more than an insinuation. It’s like, ‘If there’s two chicks it has to be sexy,'” she said. “It made me really mad. It really pissed me off. And I went back to the hotel and wrote the words to ‘Barracuda.'”

Host Kelly Clarkson attempted to put a positive spin on the story, telling the legendary rockers that they can thank the man for being an “ass” since the exchange resulted in a hit song. However, the American Idol winner noted that she too has had her fair share of uncomfortable backstage interactions.

“I hate when people come backstage and they say something stupid to me,” she said. “I’m like, ‘I just worked my tail off onstage and sang my behind off. Could you maybe reference that instead of maybe something that is so weird?’”

Clarkson concluded, “But also, thank you for ‘Barracuda,’ gross man with the weird watch.”
