Telomere Lyrics

Malevolence
And providence
Are opalescent
In the telomere

The forest floor
And the petrichor

The long and short
Of the telomere
Of the telomere

In your blood
The one thing they can't take away
The one thing they can't take away from me
Away from you or replace

Where the cells reside (it's in our blood)
Splinter and divide (it's in our blood)
They will never die
In the telomere

In the telomere that lives inside us
And the people walking down below
Crawling home alone like spiders
As the cancer slowly starts to grow
In your blood
The one thing they can't take away
The one thing they can't take away from you
Away but don't be afraid

Is living in our blood
The one thing they can't take away
The one thing they'll never take away from you
Away, so don't be afraid

Our telomere (is in our blood)
Our telomere (is in our blood)
Our telomere

Genius Annotation

Telomeres are

regions of repetitive nucleotide sequences at each end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration or from fusion with neighboring chromosomes.

These nucleotide sequences that make up the telomeres do not remain completely intact over time. As cells grow, repair, and replace themselves, the telomeres get shorter each time a cell copies itself, because

the enzymes that duplicate DNA cannot continue their duplication all the way to the end of a chromosome

“Telomere” uses this genetic phenomenon as a symbol for protection and a shield to the dangers of the outside world; however, the song fails to represent that while telomeres protect the DNA, their protection will not last forever.
