Franklin Mitchell Beamer is a retired former college football player and American college football coach, famed for his time with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Beamer grew up on a farm in Fancy Gap, Virginia.
However, in 1953 and at age seven, Mr. Beamer could have lost his life after he suffered a ghastly accident.

After using a push broom to keep a pile of burning trash in place, Beamer returned it to its place in the garage, unaware that it was smoldering.
A spark ignited a nearby can of gasoline, which exploded in front of him.
He was saved by his 11-year-old brother, Barnett who rolled im around on the ground.
Despite his elder brother’s heroic efforts, Beamer was left with burns on his shoulders, chest, and the right side of his neck.
Over the next several years, Beamer underwent dozens of skin graft procedures, leaving him with permanent scarring.
