New production - Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur

Melodrama in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to a libretto by Cesare Sterbini.
First performed at the Teatro Argentine in Rome on February 20, 1816.

The beautiful and prickly Rosina has no desire to marry her baron of a tutor! On the other hand, the young stranger who serenades her in secret every evening doesn't leave her totally indifferent...

The undisputed masterpiece of the entire bouffe repertoire, The Barber of Seville is a prodigious work of precision: brilliantly adapting Beaumarchais' play, Rossini strings together the most seductive arias and ensembles in a plot of unparalleled richness and wit! We still wonder how this pure jewel of finesse and intelligence could have been such a flop on the day of its premiere...

We can trust Benoît Bénichou to breathe new life and topicality into this pochade, which is much more profound than it appears, with its games of seduction and power, but also its strong social and political criticism. Under the gourmet baton of Beatrice Venezi, a dazzling cast led by a number of Rossinians, including Lilly Jørstad, Dave Monaco and Gurgen Baveyan.
