"Old Wave" is a strange one . It's usually panned by the world and was only released in about four countries. It is one of the very first items I ever purchased at a Beatlefest. That was September, 1983 and it was the Canadian vinyl which cost me a whopping $6 (US). There are some fine moments on this LP. Most notably "In My Car", "Picture Show Life" and "As Far As We Can Go". Around 1984 or so, I saw the Japanese pressing and the cover was GREEN. It was the only time I had ever seen that pressing. I'll assume the Japanese and New Zealand pressings are the rarest of all. Contrary to what others may say, "Old Wave" is FAR from unlistenable. It's a cool little album and in the early 1980's, was ahead of most of the garbage that was being spewed out. I was fortunate enough to have found a copy so whenever "Karma Chamelion" or "Thriller" were being jammed into my face, I would retreat into the world of "Old Wave". Good stuff.

Pretty much Ringo at rock bottom here. Not in song quality as much as there are a few decent tracks. Ringo shacks up with Joe Walsh here and they write a good chunk of the songs together here, the rest are covers. Ringo couldn't get any label in America or the UK to care so he ended up releasing this in Canada and Germany mostly although a few other countries got issues too. Ringo didn't make another album for 9 years after this due to these circumstances. It's hard for me to call this his worst album as it still has some merit for Ringo fans but it's certainly a top contender.

It's not surprising considering the dross the man had put out previously that this could only scrape a release in germany and canada.. as a result its became the lost Ringo album.
It's doubly surprising because he actually sounds up for this, his drumming is spirited throughout and some of the songs are actually ok, Joe Walsh does a good job for him.
"in my car" "picture show life" and the big ballad "as far as we can go" are all fine and he throws in bits of funk, a superstarr jam with Slowhand and friends and a couple of listenable covers too.
This was it for Ringo for 10 years, where he sank into alcoholism before cleaning up and relaunching his career with the all Starr band tours and yes...Thomas the tank engine.

Okay, so 'Old Wave''s cover does look a title-card from one of those 1981 - 1985 ITV sitcoms recorded on live-video with sickly overly bright studio-lighting and polite laughter from the throat by its invited audiece - in fact 'In My Car' sounds like its closing theme (played over said title-card), that said, Ringo does sound wholly energised here, in spite of what happened to dear old Winston, and that little issue of the booze. A number of producers involved, which if anything seems to give a unified sound, nothing too analog, nothing too digital - that happy early 80s medium, all in all. Some smart playing from Joe Walsh and Slowhand too, complementing rather than overpowering Mr. Starkey.

For a time this record signified the end of Ringos career. At this point the once best selling Beatle was losing that selling magic that kept him signed. The nicest Beatle always seemed to lack something (imo) that the others had to carry them. Paul was great at arranging music that sounded excellent, John was raw, down to earth and most influential perhaps, and George had a magnetic aire musically that I can't get enough of. Ringo never caught on with me, and this is the pinnacle of disappointment. I know it certainly doesn't seem like it but Ive always wanted to like Ringos tunes, but he needed a helping hand for it to be possible, and Walsh certainly wasn't that hand to grab.
The record isn't without its merit. In My Car is pretty good, and it's generally not lyrically terrible, but it more then any Ringo record perhaps invests nothing out of my interest. Ringo sounds so deflated on this, lacking the goofy nature that just slightly carried his other material. It's serious, but none of it hits as hard as it ought to. It was dated when it was released and is tripally so now. Cheap production, bad editing, dull vocals, sleepy melodies and depressing atmosphere make this one of the hardest Ringo records I've sat through, though in a way I'm glad to have given it a chance.
The hiatus ringo took after this was by no means short, nearly a decade passed before Time Takes Time, which was perhaps a good thing (as I will soon find out I suppose). A record often considered Ringos best. I'll no longer dwell then on this, his worst.

Showing Ringo Starr and Joe Walsh at the nadir of their collective talents, Old Wave was such a shambolic mess that it wasn't even released in the major UK and US markets. By now, it seemed as though the former Beatle's career was practically over.

Released in Germany and Canada only in 1983 (due to release problems with Boardwalk, the then-record company which published Ringo), and released on CD in 1994 and never after then, this is a true collector item.
An average album, made with Joe Walsh as Producer, it's a nice album though.

Not a stinker or anything; more like an 'average' Ringo record. Little to slam and little to praise.
