Macy’s mother, Laura McIntyre was a math teacher and her father, Otis Jones was an insurance broker but he left family when the singer was just a baby. Her mother remarried and Macy stated that she was closer to her step-father than to her biological father. By the time Gray was studying scriptwriting at the University of Southern California, she was beginning to sing and write songs. She then met a producer, Joe Solo, while she was working as a cashier, and Solo helped her to write songs and to record at his studio. Later, Macy started to sing in jazz cafés in Los Angeles and was signed by Atlanta records, but was dropped before releasing a debut album. Despite the failure, Macy was convinced to get back to the music, so she wrote, recorded new songs and signed with Epic Records in 1998.

Gray came to prominecence after releasing her second single “I Try”, which was nominated for “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year”, and won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her first album “On How Life Is” was released in 1999 and became a worldwide sensation, partly due to the popularity of the single “I Try”.

In 2001 Macy dropped second album “The Id”, which was not very successful in the US but struck number one on the UK Albums Chart. Her third album „Trouble with Being Myself“ was released in 2003, by which time Gray was co-operating with other musicians, such as John Frusciante and Erykah Badu, also recording the song “Like the Sun” with Zucchero.

From 2007 until 2014 Macy Gray managed to release five more albums: “Big”, “The Sellout”, “Covered”, “Talking Book” and “The Way”. No doubt, her net worth was also accumulated by giving concerts as well as releasing popular albums.
