In 1970s northern England, Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield is tasked with leading an investigation after several prostitutes are murdered. A £5 note left at the scene of one of the murders offers a potential lead.

Pressure mounts as the killer, now dubbed the "Yorkshire Ripper", is still on the loose. Witness testimony suggests the 'Ripper' is local to Yorkshire, but an audio tape sent to the police changes the course of the investigation.

The detectives clash with each over the veracity of an audio tape sent to them by a man who claims to be the 'Ripper'. As the attacks and murders continue, the investigation begins to impact the health of the detectives.

The police are no closer to identifying the 'Ripper', and Oldfield is replaced on grounds of ill health, by DCS Jim Hobson. Then, in January 1981, two patrol officers in Sheffield make an important discovery.
