Laboured
Despite Baldry´s distinctive voice, his limited vocal talent, and artistic inability to vary much on a theme makes this 42 song album a somewhat laboured affair. Most of the songs have been covered better by numerous other soloists to better effect.The success of his U.K. Nº 1 ballad, the title track of this release, must have sent a chill of anticipation up the backs of his record company, but with few exceptions, Baldry´s best output has always been a lot bluesier than anything on this release.

Released on the back of his UK #1 single of the same name this was an attempt by Baldry to build on the commercial success of said single.It's a creditable effort but fails,for me,because of over reliance on the type of songs most would consider to be the purview of the likes of Shirley Bassey, Matt Monro etc.Some of it works,some doesn't. The guy had a distinctive voice and it's a shame that Pye's A&R team and producers didn't go outside their own tried and trusted songsmiths for more contemporary pop material.
60's freaks like me will want it so seek out Castle's excellent double disc Pye Anthology compiling this LP,it's follow up,the aborted third LP + non album singles A's+B's.
48 years on some of us still "hear the guitars start to play" and get that old tingle.
