auBerea, Ohio – With a trio of new school records and one record broken twice, the Oberlin College track and field team had a field day at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace.
The two-day thriller began with a dominant performance by
Abby Cannon in the discus, where the third-year threw 126-1 (38.43m) to finish in sixth-place, first among NCAC opponents. The field events picked back up on Friday when Cannon and Lewis competed in the women's hammer throw event.
Iyanna Lewis threw 159-6 (48.62m), while Cannon produced a toss of 144-6 (44.04m). With the highest finish of the meet,
Chilly Wallace jumped 37-7.75 (11.42m) in the women's triple jump to earn second place.
On the track,
Sage Reddish kicked off the running events with a tenth-place finish in the 800m dash, earning a time of 2:18.53.
Kambi Obioha followed that up with a time of 48.89 in the 400m race before
Cole Fuller ran 55.19 in the 400m hurdles. Oberlin continued their evening run in Berea as
Eliza Medearis ran an 11:52.95 in the 3,000m steeplechase.
The momentum really began to build when
Walter Moak set a new school record of 9:07.58 in the 3,000m steeplechase. The time was not only the best among DIII runners but also moved the sophomore up from 29
th in the NCAA to 18
th overall.
The records continued to fall when, in the following event, the men's 4x400m team of Obioha, Fuller,
Sam Fechner, and
Simon Lowe crushed the school record and finished first among NCAC teams with a time of 3:15.48. The new record moves the team up to 19
th in the NCAA.
Breaking the third school record of the day came twice, once from
Zack Lee and then from
Namu Makatiani in the men's triple jump event. First, Lee launched himself 47-7.00 (14.50m) to crush the ten-year-old record. In his final attempt, Makatiani surpassed Lee's leap with a jump of 47-10.75 (14.60) to break the record again and earn third place overall. The new distances moved Lee and Makatiani up to tie for 22
nd and tie for 19
th in DIII, respectively.
After a successful evening of competition, the team packs their bags to compete at the Mount Union Last Chance Invite on Wednesday, May 17. Moak will travel alone to Rock Island, IL to compete in the Augustana Midwest Twilight Invitational on Thursday, May 18.
