Synopsis
Debonair playboy Nicholas "Nicky" Kerry is very cynical about love, but his younger brother, Brian, is a romantic in both head and heart. Nicky decides to end his affair with the Countess Margot de Legere in Nice, France, and goes to Monte Carlo in search of new female conquests. Inside one of the casinos, he meets and is immediately attracted to American Kay Routledge. They have dinner together, and afterwards, Nicky suggests they sneak aboard one of the nearby yachts. In actuality, the yacht is Nicky's, a fact quickly given away by his valet. Nicky and Kay do not tell each other their real names, preferring the pet names of "Monte" and "Carlotta," after their meeting place. Kay confesses her love to Nicky, but the next day he sends her a goodbye note, telling her that their parting is for the best. The broken-hearted Kay then travels to Nice, where she meets Brian. The younger Kerry immediately falls in love with her, and under pressure from her family, she agrees to their engagement. Later, Kay is separated from her friends during a street carnival, only to run into Nicky, who tells her that he has traveled halfway across the world to find her and proclaim his love. Kay is startled to discover that her "Monte" is Brian's brother, and Nicky is equally startled to learn that she is the daughter of his close friend, Mrs. Routledge. Kay then overhears Margot and her friends discussing Nicky's attitude toward women. When she sees Nicky and Margot together in an intimate setting, Kay tells Brian that she is ready to marry him whenever he so desires. Nicky goes to Kay and tries to convince her that he truly loves her, but to no avail. Brian then hears rumors of a romance between his brother and his fiancée, and he accuses Nicky of brotherly betrayal. Kay comes to Nicky's defense, and tells Brian that she tried to love him, but was unable to do so. Nicky decides to leave Nice, and accepts an invitation from his friend, the Maharajah of Jadaar, in India. Brian, finally accepting the truth, goes to his brother and convinces him to stay. Brian takes Nicky's place on the trip to India, and Nicky and Kay are happily reunited.

According to the Screen Achievements Bulletin, Bradley King's original, unpublished story was entitled "Once a Gentleman," which was also the film's working title. A Hollywood Reporter news item mentioned that the studio credit sheet issued at the preview mistakenly listed Ferdinand Gottschalk in the role played by Arthur Treacher.
