The Grand Hotel captivates many guests with its historical charm, picturesque views, and live music, contributing to a unique atmosphere. However, some visitors have called out the rooms for being overpriced and dated, suggesting they could benefit from renovations. While the amenities like the pool and dining options receive praise, the value proposition is often questioned, with travelers citing steep prices that don't always align with the experience. Service quality receives mixed reviews, ranging from commendable attentiveness to instances of inefficiency. Despite its appealing location, noise can be an issue for some guests.

My husband and I attended The Murder Mystery Weekend at The Grand Hotel. We LOVED it. The hotel was clean, accommodating, stately and historic. Our room was decorated in colorful, alluring wallpaper with matching drapes and upholstery. It was a spacious room located on the fourth floor which did not have a water view. The bed was comfortable, and due to Covid, we did not have daily housekeeping which was fine by me. The room had been sterilized before we arrived, and I liked the fact that no on came into the room after we checked in. The delicious food had an excellent presentation, and the serving staff served the food in such a formal manner. Mr. Eric Yelton did a superb job of checking to see if we enjoyed our meals. I told him it was my birthday, and that evening I had a surprise, a reserved window seat. Thank, Mr. Yelton, for you kindness. I also like the woman at the front desk bb the name of Desiree. When I called for distilled water for my CPAP, she was so kinds and accommodating. Everything was first class at this hotel. It was so elegant and gorgeous. I experienced the grandeur of the past when manners and elegance ruled. TheMurder Mystery was a lot of fun. The weekend package was very reasonably priced and offered a lot of perks. I had the best birthday ever, and I made so many memories by visiting The Grand Hotel.

The Grand never disappoints when it comes to the cozy well appointed rooms, fabulous menu, wonderfully gracious service and lovely gardens, even in October! We stayed two nights and golfed at the Jewel both days. The course is beautiful, the views are amazing and the taxi between each 9 holes is unique......but I purchased the Pure Michigan package which included our unlimited golf but not the cart fees. These cart fees are way overpriced at $25 per person per each 9 holes! So, in two days we incurred a $200 cart fee; so be prepared. My only other concern, and it is only due to Covid19, was that I don't recall reading anywhere or being told that we would need to call for any housekeeping including fresh towels. It is understandable and appreciated that staff is not allowed to be in your room when you are, but it should clearly stated somewhere; so that after returning from a full day of golf that happened to be wet and cold, we looked forward to a hot shower with clean towels before dressing for dinner; but the room had not been attended at all. We appreciate all the efforts and extra lengths they have taken to remain open to guests; and we will continue to visit this Grand Place.

From the time I was greeted at the hotel and kindly shown where I could corral my bicycle for my stay, I felt relaxed and welcomed. Keeping mind that this Grand Hotel is over 125 years olds, it was beautiful, colorful, comfortable and entertaining! The dinners were beyond relaxing and excellent!!! I wondered through the hotel during the daylight hours, absorbing the beautiful views from many different heights on the many different floors. I thought the hotel wouldn't be as entertaining at night but was I wrong. There was music, many places to sit and visit with other friendly visitors and places to partake in many special drinks!
Thank you for the most relaxing trip of a life time!!

The hotel is very charming with beautiful manicured grounds with a beautiful parlor, sitting and dining areas. We had an overpriced meal in the dining room that was delicious but the portion was not commensurate with price. We had biked the island twice that day and were very hungry. We were still hungry after the meal but thankfully we got dessert so was able to feel satiated. O

Our lake view from our room was amazing. Beds were comfortable. We did pay for the cookies and milk turndown service and that was nice and since we missed dinner we were pretty hungry. The lack of room service and in general snacks and available meals on the go was disappointing especially after we missed the fact everything closes early. However understanding it’s still COVID caused, we chalked it up to a lesson learned. Eat early! Word to the wise, go to Doud’s market to get waters, sandwiches and snacks for the room before they close as the meals at the Grand are way over-priced. The Gate House is excellent. We had a great meal there and they brought out complimentary Prosecco, dessert, a card and a gift for our anniversary! It was a wonderful surprise and we will be back there as the food was delicious and plentiful as well.

The rooms need attention. The carpeting is in need of replacement with lots of stains and wear. While it’s meant to be old fashioned/historical, the color schemes are loud and tacky and not classy or elegant as the objective should be for an 1887 built hotel. Several cracks noted in the ceiling and molding noted and doors were in pretty bad shape overall. The balcony had duct tape over cracks in the pipe. There were only about 5 tv channels that worked but tv was intermittent. Shower pressure was terrible. You could hear every word and bodily function of the guests next door.

We wanted the whole experience of the Grand Hotel but we paid over a grand each night for not so grand accommodations. I really hope that the owners take action to maintain the rooms, provide amenities for guests and not just focus on putting in a pool and making the outside look appealing.

I travel frequently for my job and have stayed at amazing hotels all over the world for a fraction of the cost that was paid for our room. I would recommend guests stay at Mission Point Resort where we have stayed before and avoid staying at the Grand. Pay the $10 admission to see the place but save yourself some money and disappointment and stay elsewhere. We won’t stay there again.

My family and I visited for our daughters 15th birthday, we had stayed one time prior about 5 years ago. We knew the pool would not be open but figured the other activities would be available and thought hotel would be great even with coronavirus going on. Sadly this was not the case. After checkin we could not find our room, along with 3 other groups , as there had been a fire drill all the fire doors were closed, and no staff had bothered to open them. We went back down to front desk and all they could do was show us a map, no one could be bothered to assist until one of other parties flagged down someone.
Our room was rather tired, a view of rooftop of another building, which I knew we were getting an interior room, but with high rate and low occupancy seemed rather ridiculous . We tried to call housekeeping as there was only 1 bottle each shampoo, etc and phone did not work , so back down to front desk. Upon return to room kids wanted to watch tv while unpacking and tv did not work. Back down to front desk to ask for assistance with this issue. All of these items were addressed within an hour or so. Later that day after dinner went to put some things in the mini fridge , that didn't work but didn't even bother to notify anyone.
We had brought tennis rackets and balls with us, there was only 1 court out of 3 playable, which we did play on the 2nd day. We saw them working on 1 other court. We rented bikes and got 4 miles around the island before running into a road closed sign, no knowledge of this before hand from guys that rented us the bikes by the pool house. My husband went to buy us drinks from the small store afterwards and charge to our room, man could not find our info. When my husband went to the front desk to figure out the issue, they could not find our info and questioned if we had checked in, and this was on the second day of our stay!
While none of these issues are a big deal by themselves, even discounting the fact that the hotel is recently opened, with a hotel charging these rates and not having many basics addressed is unacceptable. Many of these items should have been taken care of before anyone even checked in, which seems to show that the management was not ready to open but did anyway. Customer service was not extraordinary in any way as we dealt with these random issues, and most seemed indifferent. Unfortunately this will be our last visit to the Grand.

We had our bags taken up to our room from Mackinac City, only to find that they were left outside our room all day and the suit bag was thrown on the floor! The next day while we were having breakfast (We had our suitcases sent back to the mainland w hours prior to departure), we returned to our room to find they removed all of our carry-on/souvenirs and had already cleaned up the room for the next people! It was 9:00 a.m. and we had not even checked out yet! We still had our keys! Apparently they stored all of our belongings someplace, because they returned it all without me having to tell them what was taken out! Sounds to me like staff are not communicating with each other. For the amount that we paid for the exclusivity of the resort, I was very disappointed. That would never happen at even a mediocre hotel, which was surprising.

I have been in the hotel industry for over 30 years. The Grand is an iconic hotel and I have always wanted to visit and MY it did not disappoint! First of all to maintain standards and style while respecting all the COVID protocols is a very difficult balance. The staff of The Grand did it with aplomb!
We flew from Chicago to Traverse City (very easy and very quick).
The baggage transfer from the Shepler's ferry is totally handled by the hotel. One just unloads the bags from the car, it is tagged and the next time you see it, it is in your room at The Grand.
Upon arrival we chose to take the upgrade to a lake view room and would definitely book that room type again. We had a double queen, the room was nice and large (of course as it is a historic hotel the rooms are not always uniform in size). Our bathroom was dated, but very clean. I would have only wished for some type of cabinet for our toiletries. (I understand all the bathrooms are being redone this winter).
The Carlton Varney decor is very distinctive. I had been to the Greenbrier before so was familiar with it and think it is perfect for this type of hotel.
The service in the main dining room was excellent. The menu suggestions were varied and the portions were well sized. The staff was superb. Each staff member has his/her name as well as the number of years they have worked at The Grand on their name tags. Even with face masks on, you could see their eyes were smiling and it made a difference.
The hotel has other restaurants it operates as well. We had wanted to try The Woods (a Bavarian style restaurant). Unfortunately I did not know to make the reservation well in advance and we were there over the weekend so could not get a reservation (a great excuse to come back).
We also visited Traverse City and Petoskey. Next time, it will be just The Grand!
Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel. A beautifully preserved historic hotel surrounded by immaculately-attended flowers and trees. The expansive wooden front porch adorned by fresh geraniums is impressive.

The staff was friendly and helpful, despite being woefully short on personel due to the pandemic. This was most evident during dinner service; however, the delicious dinner and attentive staff made up for the longer than normal wait.

Would not recommend staying in the Studio Suites on the first floor because they are located directly above the ballroom. This proved to be a little noisy, but thankfully the evening dance band performance ended promptly at 11pm.

All in all, we had a pleasant stay.

The staff and level of service* were exemplary. The food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent. However, the room and amenities were “meh”. I’ve stayed in 4 & 5 star hotels on four continents and come to expect things like bath robes and such. Flat screen TV, in-room refrigerator and safe, and free WiFi are things included at a $150/night Holiday Inn (along with included breakfast). The room was rather small and the bathroom was unremarkable.

This was a “once in a lifetime” experience for my wife and me, and we realized beforehand that we were paying for the bragging rights of having stayed at “The” Grand Hotel. It was by far the most expensive hotel we’ve ever stayed in and I suppose the class of people who stay here on a regular basis don’t place a premium on value.

The package pricing and billing procedure were confusing at best. The ‘discount” for ferry service amounted to paying the same price at the dock as everyone can get if ordering online. It’s $2/per...Why bother advertising it at all? When we checked out, I saw nothing on the bill telling me what my credits paid for. For example, we were supposed to get free entrance to the Manoogian Art Museum. Maybe we did; maybe we didn’t. The person at the museum was unclear and I was unable to detect if it was charged to our bill. I’ll eventually do the math to figure it out.

Although not of great importance, but worth mentioning, the coffee at breakfast was thoroughly underwhelming. I’ve has better coffee at any number of cheaper hotels and even at McDonnell’s

If our friends (none of whom are in the 2%) ask about a recommendation, we’ll tell them, “yeah, you should do it once for a night or two.”

*. The service we received was great, but limited. Using COVID19 as an excuse to forego maid service was disingenuous. Saying “sorry about that” for a $600+/night room doesn’t cut it.

This hotel is one of a kind, maybe a dying breed that looks like it missed becoming obsolete from the days of the Great Gatsby. The hotel itself is more of an experience than most hotels.

You will dress for dinner - and they mean it. Jacket and tie, dresses for the ladies, no wife beater shirt with a ball cap here. That is its charm - it is an island on an island for those who truly appreciate the lost days of living well, dressing appropriately and being surrounded by people who put manners before money.

Is it expensive?

Very. Expect to spend pretty much $2,000 a day to stay there, eat, have drinks, do some of the activities. And that's for 2 people.

The rooms are small but comfortable. The little things are perfect: chairs throughout the lobby are not worn, perfectly upholstered. The beds are comfortable and the baths pretty modern.

The service is outstanding and they do not allow tipping. The porch one sees in the photos is even more impressive in person. Somehow the place was never crowded - and we were there in July 2021. Every room was filled but there were pretty much no lines anywhere.

Getting to and from are a little challenging as the first ferry in the morning departed at 8:00 AM so flight plans were a struggle.

If you plan this trip well in advance, line up your transportation and you can afford the very high price you are going to love the trip.

If you are trying to save a few bucks by working third party web sites, taking your groceries to the room, well, this place may not be for you.
