Scientific Seminars

Below is a list of upcoming seminars at the LMB aimed at a general scientific audience and open to individuals throughout Cambridge. If you are not at the LMB and wish to attend a seminar, please contact the seminar secretary, unless the seminar is held online and joining information is included in the seminar information below. The LMB hosts ‘The LMB Seminar Series’, where 1-2 leading scientists per month are invited to speak throughout the year. Four of these lectures are named in honour of LMB Nobel Laureates Max Perutz, Francis Crick, César Milstein and John Kendrew, given by eminent scientists from around the world. The LMB Seminar talks and LMB Named Seminar talks are advertised widely throughout the local area and are open to all.

    Human genes act together in complex networks to perform a myriad of functions. Whereas details maps exist for most biochemical pathways, the wiring of genetic networks in human cells is poorly understood. Using genetics in haploid human cells we have assigned genes to more than a hundred quantitative cellular phenotypes. This approach enables us to identify missing enzymes in cell biology, alternative metabolic routes and a pathway that activates cell death in response to cancer therapeutics.

    Pancreatic cancer is highly metastatic, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 10%. Tumours are hallmarked by accumulation of highly fibrotic extracellular matrix, which correlates with poor prognosis and spread to organs such as liver, lung and peritoneal cavity. Our aim is to understand the molecular connections between force sensing and aggressiveness of tumour cells. We recently discovered a connection between mechanosensing, invasive migration and metabolic supply/demand in pancreatic cancer cells. I will discuss our model for how cells align their cytoskeletal polarity with their metabolic machinery to meet the high demands of the cancer microenvironment. If we can better model and understand this alignment, we can hope to find new ways to target the aggressiveness and spread of pancreatic cancer.
