Variety Staff Variety Walt Disney's production of 20000 Leagues under the Sea is very special kind of picture, combining photographic ingenuity, imaginative story telling and fiscal daring. Jun 6, 2007 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Grandly entertaining. Jun 6, 2007 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out This is one of the great movie adventures, fully deserving its canonisation in Disney World. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies Visionary for the 50s, this suffers a bit from the serialized nature of the source material. Jim H Made in a time when Disney actually made seriously great movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Wyatt E My number one favorite movie of all time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review Alec B James Mason is just the perfect Nemo, which might be all that matters. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Alexander d The special effects were "real" not virtual. The squid was much more interesting than the Shark in "Jaws". The islanders' attack. I think that had it been less jokey and with more insight into the crew members, it could have been a truly great film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review Russell H Ages well. The squid looks great and fantastic atmosphere Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Jacob B 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea's well-shot underwater sequences, charismatic performances, rousing score and, of course, memorable fight against a giant squid more than compensate for its rather loose plotting that sadly contributed to me not understanding why some hail this as one of Disney's best live-action films. Don't get me wrong, this movie is good but if I had to choose which was the better adventure film from back when Walt Disney was still alive, I'd choose Swiss Family Robinson in a heartbeat.
