      Critics Consensus

Marathon Man runs the gamut from patient mystery to pulse-pounding thriller, aided by Laurence Oliver's coldly terrifying performance and a brainy script by William Goldman.

Kevin Maher Times (UK) Yet everything else here — the gritty supporting players, the conspiracy theories and the Central Park finale — marks the pinnacle of 1970s paranoia thrillers, as Hoffman’s Jewish graduate student is sucked into a shadowy world of postwar spooks... Kim P Scheider and Devane were almost as good in their roles as Hoffman and Olivier were in theirs! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Dave C The antagonist - LO, and script really make this! Young Hoffman is always a pleasure, so in all this is solid. However, there are segments that are just too slow and unnecessary and they bring it down from a 5* epic Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Alex P Chilling Thriller with a brilliant script, absolutely worth a watch! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Cork B Decent thriller, but doesn't really live up to the hype. Something like 3 Days of the Condor was better. Hoffman does a great job playing the everyman caught up in over his head. There is a slow build up to the backstabbing end which is done well, but the action scenes are just poorly done and distract. Also, Hoffman's character is the marathon man, and for all the build up there is only one short payoff scene where he barely gets away. Also, there is a pointless McCarthy backstory when the main baddie is a Nazi. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Alec C Prepare for a marathon of espionage, murder and masterful acting! After his brother is murdered, an unassuming marathon runner learns that his brother was pursuing a dangerous fugitive and becomes a target in the process. Shown with a sense of danger and lots of suspense, this spy thriller manages to make us sweat every time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Red T It's really good but it's rocky at times. It still succeeds at being a Classic Thriller though. The acting is really good. Olivier steals the with a really menacing performance and everyone else is really good also. I do wish Hoffman and Schneider got more time together than they did though. The music is excellent also with a really haunting and memorable tune. The cinematography is filled with really well done gritty, on location, tense scenes that are incredibly well shot. The issue is there are a couple of farfetched scenes here and there throughout. The editing while solid is the weakest point and the pacing is very good. The main issues are in the first 50 minutes. This jumps around a lot and doesn't really tie Hoffman, Schneider, Olivier & His Brother together in a cohesive manner. After 50 minutes I followed each arc but I couldn't tell you what it was about. And being honest Schneider's scenes could've probably been cut out and helped make this more brisk and focused. However this movie really finds its sweet spot once Schneider & Hoffman meet up together and it really never lets up in the second half and gets super intense. The plot is interesting but there are quite a few coincidences throughout especially how he meets his girlfriend, Schneider being able to make it back to his apartment hurt, Olivier not wearing a disguise in a Jewish area. But the second half is so darn strong with its direction, acting, soundtrack and becomes so much more focused it can be forgiven and above else believed. Anyone who is a fan of Thrillers, the Director, or any actors in this will like this a lot. Just be patient with it for the first half.
