Hugo Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly – St. Georgs-Orden

Hugo Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly

† 21.11.2023

Excerpt from the Chancellor´s letter on the passing away:

I regret to inform you of the passing of our Honorary Knight Hugo Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly, who died in Prague on 21 November 2023 at the age of 94.

Hugo Mensdorff-Pouilly was born at Boskovice Castle in 1929. He came from an old aristocratic family with origins in Lorraine in France. He spent his childhood together with seven other siblings in Boskovice and the surrounding area. The family tried to emigrate, but were arrested and imprisoned. He worked in various professions during the regime: Driver, clerk, car washer and tyre technician in bus transport and many others. After the Velvet Revolution, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was consul in Paris and worked in the embassy of the Maltese Order. He lived in Prague and Boskovice, where he enjoyed giving guided tours of his family’s castle.

Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly was admitted to the Order of St. George as a Honorary Knight at the Order’s Convent in Prague in April 2022. Our community and the values of the Order were incredibly important to him and he tried to stay close to and in contact with the Commandery Tschechien for as long as his health allowed.

My and our sincere condolences go to the many relatives.
