When they stay away from a snowfall still, this is eminently serviceable Christmas music, which is to say it does me no good. When the group drops the tempos and calms the mood, this gets drippy real quick, pooling at the bottom of the tree in an utterly disinterested "We Three Kings".
'Tis the season, I guess.

I find that I have the most fun listening to these guys when I'm already familiar with the song they've chosen to play. I hear a melody I know and I begin to pay attention. Otherwise it's all too easy to go off woolgathering. That's why their Christmas album should be among their best. And, for a while, that's exactly how it happens. For the first three or five songs, I'm having a good time, enjoying their playfulness, chuckling to myself at the appearance of sleigh bells, and thinking of snow-covered merriment. But somewhere around "Silver Bells" I find myself tuning out again. Rather than keeping it light and fun, the band slows it down, goes for thoughtful atmospherics, and I don't perk up again until they close it with a snappy little "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". It has more going for it than And Now, but ultimately it's still just the next Booker T. album.

This really isn't too bad, sure its a bit bland at points. But hell, Booker T's version of Jingle Bells and Santa Claus Is Comin' are both nice, and of course theirs the soulful Blue Christmas. The album does start to fall apart near the end, as it goes into the more traditional/religious songs, but hey, half the albums good, half is forgettable/boring, so take this for the good.

A Stax rarity for a special christmas with the tight funky soul groove of the Mg's.
