Trail was beautiful. Still snow

Snow spikes were a must in most areas.

May 22, 2024Hiking

Definitely needed micro spikes at some points - but the views were worth it. Dress warm!

I think this is my favourite hike of all time!!! The views are so breathtakingly beautiful it’s hard to put into words. We had poles and spikes which we highly recommend

Absolutely beautiful, one of the favorite hikes I’ve ever done. Micro spikes and poles made all the difference in May, easy to rent for $10 (+$2 for the poles) at outdoor world in estes park.

Hiked 5/18. Definitely need at least spikes. Poles also ideal. Do NOT go out there in shorts, t-shirt, and tennis shoes. Depending on the day the shorts and t might be fine, but certainly not the tennis shoes, which we saw far more of than we would have expected. It went about as well as you can imagine. Trail is definitely moderate if you're at least a semi avid hiker, and I would even put it on the lower end of moderate. A bit higher with the snow/ice. Parking was insane, though that probably has as much to do with it being one of the few great hiking areas of the park open at the time. As of Memorial Day weekend they'll have the shuttle running, just be aware that it doesn't go all the way to the Bear Lake lot. It drops you at the Gorge lot, and you have 3/4ish mile hike from there to trailhead, and it's a decent incline, though pretty manageable. Otherwise, the hike was absolutely spectacular and one of the best bangs for your buck you'll get hiking wise. It's well worth going all the way to the end!

Snow is everywhere, don’t try to hike unless you have snowshoes or spikes and poles. There is 40 inches of snow still

Probably the most beautiful trail I have ever hiked— words cannot describe it!! Although it is strenuous going up, it is totally worth it!!! However, spikes and poles make all the difference ! May seem like an overkill, but people were sitting down and sliding because there is just no traction without them. Enjoy your hike!!!

Almost completely snow covered — poles and spikes recommended

Rocked this hike today. Absolutely stunning views and the snow was delish. Microspikes/poles would have made it easier but they aren't absolutely necessary if you have hiking boots with good grip.

Hiked on 5/13. Beautiful hike, though I will echo other reviewers to wear spikes! Started the hike around 0900 and by 1000 the snow warmed up and was very slippery. I would not attempt this without spikes until the snowpack clears, and spikes are easily rentable at many of the outfitters in Estes. Still absolutely worth it, there were plenty of amazing views!

Spikes in your shoes.. poles in your hands.. enjoy the trail much more than without these things!!

Beautiful views, definitely wear spikes and poles were a plus. Saw many people attempting and slipping without spikes. Getting to emerald lake was the toughest but absolutely worth it. Not too bad overall though.

Wear spikes! Super snowy.

Great snow packed trail. Absolutely need micro spikes. Absolutely Beautiful! The Ranger at the trail head was kind, gracious and informative.

Beautiful, even when overcast! Poles and spikes strongly recommended.

Snow the whole way. Microspikes needed.

May 8, 2024Hiking

Definitely worth the hike! So much easier if you've got poles and spikes. Overall, the lakes were beautiful!

You must get micro spikes! I also recommend poles. We did it without poles but I wish we had gotten them. We rented our shoe spikes at outdoor world for really cheap. Total game changer.

Good hike, spikes and poles recommend.

Arrived by 8a for easy parking and less crowds. The trail was 100% snow covered and a bit slippery on the descent so spikes were needed. Spectacular views!

great day to hike. microspikes def make it a lot easier to complete the hike, saw people slipping around the entire time.

We are in the mid 60s. We made to Dream Lake and back and made a complete loop around Bear Lake. Snowy conditions all the way. We would not have made it without crampons and poles. Going down is especially hard without the gears for older people. We enjoyed every second of our first ever Rocky Mountain.

Micro spikes or snowshoes are required in the winter. The trail is beautiful. It’s recommended to download an offline map of the trail because the trail path gets covered with snow during winters.

Conditions: Great!

We contemplated spikes for a while based on all the comments and ended up going without them. Going up was no problem, but coming down was sketchy at times. Up to you but we probably wouldn’t have changed our decision if we could do it again

April 14, 2024Hiking

Snowy and slushy. Spikes are a great idea. Poles are even better. Beautiful

April 13, 2024Hiking

spikes are a plus right now , weather was great , needed a light jacket once you get to the lake areas there's a good chilly wind. beautiful hike and completely worth every minute of it!

April 13, 2024Hiking

Amazing views! Spikes definitely recommended in the winter

April 13, 2024Hiking

Spikes and Poles - not bad with spikes but if you go later morning/afternoon and its sunny and warm, youll slip and slide. Ranger mentioned lakes will start showing water next week, started to see water in some places already. Also lot was packed Sat by 11am, 1/2 full by 8am, advise getting there early

April 6, 2024Hiking

This trail was an easier hike that we really enjoyed. The lakes are still frozen over so you can walk across easily. Lots of skiers and snowboarders along the way. We found spikes to be very helpful but you could do it without. This is a nice trail if you have children joining. Definitely recommend!

Conditions: Slippery
