This is a fantastic recording of an amazing concert. "One Man Crusade" and "The Farm" really stand out because of the emotion Rainer conveys by the interplay of his voice, guitar and lyrics. Rainer embodies the arid beauty of Tucson in his music, which is blues at its core but very unique and soulful. Rainer is an acquired taste; if you were to limit your collection to only one CD of his, this would be my recommendation. But the more you listen the more you will want.

If you never got the chance to see him perform. This cd gives you a good representation of a very gifted and interesting artist, If you did get the opportunity to see him perform you will really enjoy hearing him again. I was one of the lucky ones who did get to see him.

Rainer's best

Unfortunately, Rainer Ptacek died virtually unknown. He was a brilliant musician with a unique vision. His electric work with Das Combo tended towards fast and blustery, but his acoustic work was subtle and intricate. This is a solo live concert he gave towards the end of his life, and it showed just how amazing he was. This album is just Rainer with a resonator guitar, combining his intricate finger-picking and his unusual slide work. Stylistically, he combined John Fahey's odd sense of meter and melody with Chris Whitley's blues leanings. His voice is a bit of an acquired taste, and nowhere near as good as Whitley's, but in fact, Rainer was an influence on Whitley's guitar playing, or so I would have to guess. Rainer's recordings predate Chris Whitley, and I have a hard time believing that a Texan like Whitley was unaware of this Tuscon resident, particularly when Whitley started playing around with combining electronic effects with National guitars (a trick that Rainer used well before Whitley released Rocket House). There are two Rainer compilations out at the moment. Don't bother. Once you get into Rainer, you'll want to track down all of his stuff. Personally, I can do without his electric work, but his acoustic stuff, including this album, is essential.

Further listening: John Fahey (obviously), Chris Whitley (obviously), John Hasbrouck, Tom Doughty, Jeff Lang, Woody Mann, David Lindley's recordings with Wally Ingram or Hani Naser, Bob Brozman, Darin Bennett.
