What does "without Simlock" mean when buying a mobile phone?
The word "SIM-Lock" stands for " S ubscriber I dentitiy M odule"-Lock, which roughly means "participant identity module" lock. Put simply, its a sim -Lock around a cell phone with a blocked SIM card. Conversely, this means that smartphones without a sim lock are unlocked cell phones in which you can insert any SIM card.
- When buying a smartphone without SIM lock, you can insert any SIM card and are not tied to a provider. If you no longer like the current provider, you can switch at will - of course only if you are not bound by a contract.
- In the past, prepaid cell phones used to have sim locks. In the case of contracts, it only exists in Austria.
- Simlock not only blocks access to other providers, but also to countries. There is a total and an ID SIM card lock. If you buy a mobile phone without a SIM lock, you are not affected by any of these locks and can use the smartphone freely.
