Lesson Plan: The Heart Biology • Second Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the basic structure of the heart and explain how the heart is adapted for its function.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall the location of the heart in the human body as being fairly central in the chest cavity and encased by ribs for protection,
  • describe the basic structure of the heart including the ventricles, atria, valves, and connected blood vessels of pulmonary vein/artery, vena cava, and aorta,
  • outline the route the blood takes through the heart and around the body,
  • explain how the different structures of the heart aid its function, including the cardiac muscle, the valves (bicuspid, tricuspid, and semilunar), and the associated blood vessels,
  • use the equation cardiac output = heart rate × stroke volume to complete simple calculations.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that the heart is a major organ and pumps blood around the body.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the cardiac cycle and the role of the SAN and AVN.
