David Michael McHugh

Harwich - David Michael McHugh, 82, passed from this life on January 29, 2022. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to many people, he will be missed by all who knew him.

David was born in Holyoke MA to the late Catherine (Delaney) McHugh and Edward J. McHugh M.D.

He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Fairfield University and The University of Connecticut School of Law.

David practiced law in Connecticut for over 50 years, first as a public defender and then in private practice. He was a long-time resident of Fairfield CT.

He was an avid sailor, private pilot, auto collector/mechanic, horseback and motorcycle rider. He was also a passionate home "project guy", including designing and building the family's summer home on Martha's Vineyard in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the help of his wife and two sons. He loved animals, including his dog Eider and his horse, Tough Guy.

His true passion in life was his family whom he lavished with his attention, kindness, grateful spirit, warm smile and incredible sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 61 years, Elena (Fiorello) McHugh of West Harwich, his son Mark McHugh of Boston and his partner Holly (Helliwell) Fabyan. He was predeceased in 2020 by his son David McHugh of New Fairfield. He is also survived by his son David's wife, Jaculin (Haggerty) McHugh and his cherished grandchildren, Merrill (McHugh) Seraphin and her husband Jon Seraphin of Stamford CT, Abby McHugh of Boston, Jess McHugh of Paris France, James (Delaney) McHugh of Los Angeles CA, Elli McHugh of Portland ME and Finn McHugh of New Fairfield, CT, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Edward D. McHugh, M.D. and his brother John McHugh, M.D.

The McHugh family would like to thank the staff of Liberty Commons and Broad Reach Hospice for the kind and incredible care that they took of David for the last 20 months of his life.

All are welcome to celebrate his life and attend his funeral Mass which will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 44 Highland Ave Chatham MA on Saturday, February 12th, 2022 at 11:00 am
