Chennai Super Kings produced a clinical performance on Wednesday to register a commanding 27-run victory over bottom-dwellers Delhi Capitals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The second successive win helped CSK consolidate their second spot in the Indian Premier League standings with 15 points from 12 games, a point behind the table-toppers Gujarat Titans (16 points from 11 games). After setting a competitive 168-run target, CSK bowlers, led by Matheesha Pathirana (3/37), stopped DC to 140 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. It was the seventh win of the season for the hosts CSK, while DC suffered their seventh defeat in 11 games to remain stranded at the bottom of the points table.
As a spinner, it feels good when the ball is turning and holding. We practise here, we know what's the ideal length and pace. The visiting team needs time to adapt. We are taking advantage of the home conditions. Everyone's doing their job. We are doing a good job collectively.

It turned a lot in the second half. We know that our spinners use a lot more seam than some of the other bowlers. We thought it'll slow down. We didn't know what's a good score. That's why I wanted the bowlers to bowl their best deliveries but not look for wickets every delivery. That's when you start not bowling well. I felt 166-170 was a good score. But as a batting unit, we can do better. The good thing is Moeen and Jaddu got a chance to bat. As we get closer to the last phase of the tournament, it's important that everybody has a few deliveries under their belt. We need to be happy with our batting. I would have loved Mitch (Santner), he's a bowler that has done very well on flat wickets with the new ball. He hits the seam and bowls at a good pace. He (Gaikwad) is batting really well, he's somebody once he starts scoring, he's very effortless. He's somebody who's happy to rotate. He has the game awareness. He is ready to adapt. You rarely get people like that. People who read the game, those are the kind of players you need in your team. This is what my job is, I have told them this is what I am supposed to do, don't make me run a lot and it has been working. This is what I need to do, happy to contribute.

It was swinging nicely and at the same time, the pitch was slow. I had a chat with Mahi bhai, when the wickets are getting slower, you don't need to bowl fast, bowl slow and swing it, it's difficult for the batters to get the boundaries in the powerplay, he said. We thought the wicket would slow down in the 2nd innings and it was cloudy, so no dew - that's why Mahi bhai decided to bat first. 165 was a par score on this track. Powerplay was crucial as the ball came nicely and we had a great powerplay. It is very difficult with injuries, every time you get injured you start from zero. Still not 100% but trying to do a job to contribute to the team.

Back to losing three wickets. We lost a wicket in the first over. Our opening combination is crucial. We lost a wicket to a run-out. We threw wickets away. Put too much pressure on ourselves. Was a gettable total. To sum it up, we needed a better first six. We couldn't rotate the strike. We needed to try different things but we couldn't. When you get a wide half-tracker you can't hit it to cover. We should have executed better with those wide half-trackers.

The wicket is slow and the ball is stopping as well. There is dew now. It won't be very easy but I think it's chaseable. Not much dew, but it won't be easy to grip the ball. (On Conway's wicket) His main shots are sweep and reverse-sweep. The captain wanted to have a deep square leg, I told no and wanted him to hit towards that area. I bowled the first ball full and he missed it. Glad that I got a wicket off the first ball, otherwise I may not have completed my quota of four overs (laughs).
