La primera incursión de Peter Mullan en el cine fue con la película Riff-Raff de Ken Loach, seguida de Braveheart y Trainspotting. Ganó un premio a Mejor Actor en el Festival de Cine de Cannes de 1998 por la película de Ken Loach Mi nombre es Joe.
El debut de Mullan en la gran pantalla como guionista y director por la elogiada Orphans, le valió cuatro premios en el Festival de Cine de Venecia de 1998. Más tarde retomó la dirección y la escritura con la polémica película Las hermanas de Magdalena por la que recibió el premio León de Oro en el Festiva de Cine de Venecia en 2002.
