What travelers are saying
- Mrs A N C1 contributionWhat a superb experience! Having arrived late due to confusion on our part (sat-nav did not register the correct salt works and, with a niggling feeling that something wasn’t right, we first went to Berchtesgaden!) we fully expected to be unsympathetically turned away, especially as we had booked the last tour of the day and still not paid. The staff could not have been more helpful! The desk clerk contacted a senior member of staff on the other side of the entrance who came and assisted us with paying and coveralls and whisked us into the guest queue to take the train into the mines. Thank you, lovely staff! You turned the end of our day around from potential disappointment to feeling very lucky, and we fully appreciate that you didn’t have to! Thank you also to the lovely lady who helped me make the booking via email from the UK in advance and dealt with all my queries about how to apply the Salzburg card so very quickly.
Once in coveralls, a little train took us into the mines - already a great adventure! Our tour guide was one of the best!! He spoke extremely clearly in both German and English (so often, we speak too quickly in our native language, yet not everyone understands English so an appropriate pace in both is helpful! I speak German and enjoyed listening to both explanations!). He was also fun and theatrical - one minute turning on a short film about airflow in the salt mines, then, when the lights came back up, sitting atop a model of the slide to demonstrate its use! Our guide was also very keen to check that the tour was accessible to all and that languages and physical needs were met. V impressed, humoured and captivated! Loved the photo pose on the slide too! ; )
We loved the two slides and picked up great photos there (before you leave, use the email function for a free digital copy after you have bought your photo print), as well as crossing the underground Austrian-German border twice, taking the little boat and returning on the train. The information about the mines themselves was also really clear and interesting, and in short bursts that maintained interest and was very child-friendly.
And for the nervous - the slides were not too fast and did not feel out of control, rather gentle with plenty of storing space at the bottom. And if you don’t like slides/are unable to use them - discuss your options with the guide!
So, a big thumbs up from us, along with heart felt thanks!Written June 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can go as fast as you want on the carts which was great! We got stuck behind a few slower people on 2 out of the 3 runs we did but still had a lot of fun.
We came using public transit from the Hallein Train station taking bus no. 41 all the way to the bottom of the lift at the Zinkenlift bus stop. Google maps does not know this bus exists for some reason but it is there!Written September 29, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Good is to have salt mine on the same spot and visiting both is logical.Written January 3, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - heikkih722Helsinki, Finland1,632 contributionsFranz Gruber played the organs of this church. He is the composer of "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht". Nice church is worth of visiting. Some kilometers from Autobahn.Written October 12, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jozef SBratislava, Slovakia689 contributionsVisiting "Salzwelten" salt mine of Hallein you will notice beautiful red-marble church located uphill from the entrance to salt mine. Well, it's a steep climb :-) BUT you effort will be rewarded by great view of the valley in the direction of Salzburg and beautifully decorated interior of the church.Written June 7, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steve G2 contributionsI enjoyed the simplicity of the museum.
The artifacts and authenticity were also interesting.
I also enjoyed the fact that it was not crowded and I could stop and read everything with feeling rushed or that I was intruding on other peoples time.Written October 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is just enough information on the posted signs to give you a sense of life in this bronze or iron age village. Examples of their industry and products are exhibited in the buildings - some are dwellings, others artisan workshops. The playground can drain some of the excess energy of active small fry while parents examine the village.Written July 25, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kathy KAllen, TX167 contributionsIn a beautifully restored home next door to the church, this quaint little museum is really more dedicated to Franz Gruber, with many of his personal belongings, but with a definite focus to his main contribution to history, the carol Stille Nacht or Silent Night. Several documents in Gruber’s hand clarify the process of writing this now iconic Christmas song. Unlike the stories I had always heard, it was not a sudden spark of inspiration on a Christmas Eve night without an organ. The poem from Joseph Mayr was shared with Gruber some time before he composed the tune, but was first performed with guitar which is on display. Worth a stop if you are in Hallein!Written December 30, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
