Not quite the big comeback DMX needed at this point in his quietly sagging rap career, Grand Champ regardless has its share of highlights. Longtime fans may decide to drop off at about this point, if they hadn't already, while those content with the usual -- or new to DMX -- should find plenty to savor on Grand Champ.
Grand Champ explores more of the same inner feelings of the dig that’s been heard on all of his albums.
Most of the material on the album suffers from hollow lyrics and a lack of varying themes.
It becomes apparent that the album is just part of a promotional pitch for his new doggie clothes business venture. That’s confirmed by the utter lack of creativity behind his beats and rhymes, which all employ the same canine metaphors to restate Grand Champ’s main message: don’t mess with DMX.

On his 5th album, DMX still reminds us that he still has the dog in him, and is indeed still very pissed off.
I feel like after his 2nd album, he got way too comfortable and lost his charm a little bit, with his 3rd and 4th album he couldn't rekindle the spark that he got with his first 2 albums.
With this one, he pretty much succeeded on many fronts, he sounds hungry again, pretty much brought it back to 1998 DMX.

It's a bit better than The Great Depression, mainly through the album's production. Album isn't really pushing DMX forward either. His most "banger" focused album.
