Yes, this is well-done and well-structured and watchable as a conventional biopic, but will Arte ever give money to handle the kind of material here in a more artistically rich way? I'm not stuck in the 70s but the story of the Manns really deserves some kind of Syberberg-level treatment.
I watched this trilogy some years ago and never forgot some insights I got out of it. Gave it to my grandparents for Christmas and had to force them to watch it but it was worth the rewatch.
A very nice mix of documentary and reenactment, based heavily on the actual personal journals of Thomas Mann and with recounts of family members.
Big recommend!
