Esoteric Recordings imprint Cocteau Discs, the home of Bill Nelsons catalogue between 1971 and 2001, continues their series of on-going releases with the release of a newly remastered edition of the album, After The Satellite Sings. The album was recorded in 28 days at Fairview Studios in East Yorkshire in 1995 and saw Bill push his constantly evolving musical boundaries still further. Like others I loved The Love that Whirls, and on retrospect it keeps getting better to my ears.
On my first listening to After a Satellite Sings I thought it was one of his better efforts. Upon subsequent listenings it grew on me so that now I'm thinking it's the best I've heard from him which is high praise considering everything he releases is at least smart and thoughtful and his output is pretty large.
Bill is a sponge, listening to everything, and gradually adding to his ovre. He just keeps growing. Rhythms, percussion, samples, synths, marimbas and of course his guitar. What other guitar player uses an ebow? Certainly few as well as Bill. I'm not a big fan of modern "jazz" guitar but Bill pulls it off as well as hip hop type stuff, ambient and Reich like trance. Somehow his integration of styles works. Other reviewers have compared him to Steve Tibbetts which is apt as both are very unique and skilled guitarists with a quiver full of expertly mastered styles.
But forget about the guitars. One of the better composers out there. Composers are rare. There is real attention to the details of every sound no matter how small. He's also an excellent arranger. The lyrics are interesting and literate. No clichés here. Very literary. Highly recommended to people with smart ears. If I were to recommend one Bill Nelson I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one.
I hadn't heard any Bill Nelson since Be Bop Deluxe and wanted to hear something more recent. This was written and recorded in 28 days and while that is a magnificent achievement it means it is underwritten. The vocal melodies in particular tend to sound very samey through the album. The better tracks tend to be those with a recognisable hook - wake up or leave the planet - for instance, but none reaches the heights of any track on say Sunburst finish. I know it is a different genre - and he's a lot older - I could have just done with a little more pizzazz. Still it makes me want to try other stuff he's produced. He's very much like David Bowie experimenting with different sounds and styles.
I purchased this CD after getting back into Bill's albums up to "getting the Holy Ghost" reviews seemed positive and I was not disappointed. A really great album with everything that you would expect from Bill. Now I need to take the plunge and get some more of his back catalogue
as a rabid be bebop deluxe fan, i lamented bill nelson's foray into experimental electronica. slightly interesting at best , i found myself completely disassociated from the former frontman of my all time favorite band.
sometimes i would pick up one of his solo efforts, only to be disappointed.
AND THEN..."after the sattelite sings" blew me away. it is so different from the dreck you hear on the radio, or for that matter, the internet "alternative" stations. jazz, rock, electronic, blues. it has it all.
of course, it has no commercial potential, because it requires thought and attention. but for folks whose musical taste is not formulated by the playlist of 3 classic rock stations, it's an oasis. i pray to jebus that there is more on the way.
