Los Angeles High School of the Arts (LAHSA) Reviews
Rating 3.96 out of 5 140 reviews
It is a small but good school; the teachers are very focused and want students to learn and do their best, there is a lot of "culture" relating to the types of art classes, but mostly only applies to visual and cinematic arts and sometimes theater. The students at the school dedicate a lot of their time to focusing on their arts as well as pushing through their academic classes. However, this environment can prove to be competitional, but students strive to keep pushing and doing their best at what they can do for themselves.
During all my high school years in LAHSA, I felt very safe and welcomed as the teachers and the counselors truly look out for every student.
They teach you your art focus well, and you'll be ahead of many when applying for college majors in the future. However, there is a constant lack of communication between art chairs and the academic teachers. Large projects will be due on days students have tests and presentations. Assignments do not give enough leeway for artwork. Students were profiled as drug users and antagonized instead of being given help. I saw many cases of students not having any other option but having to rely on counselors who could not keep things completely confidential. There was a lot of favoritism from certain academics teachers and visual arts teachers. Principals were often disconnected from students despite effort. Many of the kids at an art school are going to have unique issues all rounded up into one place and some higher ups couldn't comprehend that. The environment is chaotic, and many students interrupted/did not care about their learning or other students'.
