And that’s a wrap on Geraldo Rivera.
Fox News bid adieu to Rivera and his iconic mustache (see set photo below) during Friday’s edition of Fox & Friends, offering the veteran broadcaster an opportunity to reflect on his 22-year stint on the conservative cable news channel.
“I feel so verklempt already,” Rivera said at the top of the segment. “I am leaving Fox, my dear friends. I was fired from The Five, so then I said, ‘I might as well resign totally,’ and I quit. And today is my last day. But I want to leave not thinking about those things; I want to leave thinking about how wonderful everyone has been to me…. We have shared so many experiences.
“It started with 9/11,” the former war correspondent pointed out. “The reason I came here was because I had a great show… on CNBC, but they wouldn’t let me go to war. [Former Fox News chairman and CEO] Roger Ailes, who was our boss at the time, had earlier been my boss at CNBC, and he said, ‘OK, I’ll let you be a war correspondent if you work for half pay…’ and it took me around the world. Life takes you strange places, but it established a relationship with Fox that people would not ordinarily think of as a natural relationship because of political ideologies and so forth — me being more on the progressive side than many of my colleagues — but it worked out. Everybody was open-minded, open-hearted… I was treated as a family member here, and I hope it was reciprocated. There are ways to work as colleagues, and then there are ways to work as family, and I really do think that we became family.”
The segment ended with a montage chronicling Rivera’s 50+ years in broadcasting — including clips from his eponymous daytime talk show (featuring former president Donald Trump), the infamous opening of Al Capone’s vault and his reality-TV stints on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing With the Stars — and a series of pre-taped goodbyes from members of the Fox News family.
Will you miss Rivera on Fox News? Hit the comments with your reactions to Friday’s farewell.
No,not at all!!
Geraldo, you will be missed. Take care and enjoy your retirement.
Will I miss him? I didn’t realize he was still around!
Yes 😢
You must be a liberal.
Good riddance to that RINO.
How is he a Rino?????? SMH1
I won’t miss him even a little. I’m from Long Island and don’t consider he good representative of LIers.
He dated a woman named Connie Seyler and I married her sister. Nobody in the family cared much for Jerry R.
Full of himself. Never really thought he was relevant. Of course he got half pay for his work. His stuff was phoney. P.u.
He is a Great journalist a true one of a kind of
a kind. I for one will miss his style. Wasn’t
afraid to speak out and take a opposing veiw.
Met Rivera as a lawyer for the Puerto Rican group ‘The Young Lords’. I and others were very impressed by him. Rivera at times was a fighter for the right reasons of the poor, youth and the uplifting of his community and defender for human rights. What happened Rivera. I never he!rd him state the change of his politics.
When that happened Ino longer watched him.
He is just too stubborn in his ways he never would let anyone else’s opinion deter his own opinion his opinion was his way or no way I will not listen I’m a very loyal Fox fan and I will not miss him I’m surprised Jesse and Friends let him live that long on the channel I will not listen Michael Bennett loyal watcher and listener Geraldo had to go I understand you always need the other side of defense’s opinion but he would never budge he was always right even when he was dead wrong never could accept when he was wrong and that was a lot again Jesse and the Gang let him live for a long long time I don’t hate anybody but people you can’t have a conversation with it’s not good for news
Always interesting to watch him. I Wish him good health and a good future.
I always liked Geraldo watched him from the days of his traveling reporting.
I also watched him on the five but could see how he changes. I could see he irritated Greg Gutfeld. He claims he was close to Trump but chewed him up and spit him out on the five.
To me that’s not a friend. Goodbye Geraldo and good luck!!
Yes, I will miss Geraldo, especially when he appeared on The Five. He really
made the show when he was on. It’s a shame that there was so much tension
between him and Greg Gutfeld. I enjoyed hearing his point of view and felt he
was very knowledgeable about all sorts of matter. I don’t believe that I will
continue to watch The Five now that he is gone. There is no back-and-forth
anymore from the panelists, no drama, no opposite opinions that made sense.
The one that should go is Greg Gutfeld! And I NEVER comment on something
like this, it’s just that, I am so disappointed that Geraldo is leaving the show.
Gutfeld is a pitbull for sure (a smart, fun lovable.sometimes naughty attacking pitbull, & he has Gusfeld as a sidekick…how fun)!
Geraldo was not a good fit for the round table. He had a great career but over time really belonged on CNN or MSNBC. It’s sad that his career ended on a sour note?Maybe he will end up on a cable news station that’s a better fit for him in the near future. I just don’t think he’s done yet.
Maybe NewsNation? Cuomo showed up there after CNN. Didn’t care for Cuomo’s lock-step group think on CNN but actually enjoy his show on NewsNation where it’s less of a groupthink agenda. Geraldo was historically less of groupthink guy than other liberals & pretty genuine with opinions (though recently may have started to slip into that partisan lockstep just a little more) so I think he could be a decent fit on NewNation if he wanted that. But …maybe he’ll just want to hang with those kids & grandkids he adores so much!
No, my husband & I will not miss him on the five. Most of the time when We saw he was on the five, we would turn it off. We think Fox needs to get rid of Jessica too. We really don’t know what she’s talking about half the time. But we love Harold Ford. At least he has some sense about him & we know what he’s talking about. He gets along with the others & they all seem to like him & respect him. They don’t argue with him like they do with Jessica. She’s a poor addition on the five.
Greg Gutfeld is my absolute favorite (of many many other greats on Fox), but have to say I’d love to hear Greg publically apologize for brutally trying to publically humiliate Harold live on The Five some months back over a diction error Harold made. It was a Gutfeld humor moment, it was a true Gutfeld dick-tion faux pau moment against Harold, the sweetest guy…GG might as well have kicked a newborn puppy on live TV. Harold, you handled that with class! Gutfeld, you’re sharo, hilariious, & still my favorite, but really man an apology was/is in order for that one!
*Edit: it was *not* a Gutfeld humor moment.
Couldn’t agree more. Get rid of Jessica. Hopefully she’s next.
Couldn’t agree more.
I think he was unbearable to watch on the Five. He didn’t just give an opposite view, he ostracized many people. He seemed to think he knew everything even if he was absolutely wrong! Too arrogant for me!. Glad he’s gone.
Yes will genuinely miss Geraldo but trust that this may be best for him & may be what he’s actually wanted for a while now. In recent years, overly sensitive in taking others’ overall perspectives & realities super personally. Instead of just passionately explaining his own differing perspective he’d get super judgy & go into that get off my lawn punk unreasonable angry closed off sort of tone. He’s sharp, smart, charming, knowledgeable, & on his game, just like always, but maybe just seeming like he’s had enough & maybe would rather focus more on family now after a full successful lifetime spent focusing on the country, politics, the world. Always enjoyed him, always would enjoy him. He’s for reals. Hoping he still shows up as a Fox guest from time to time & hoping he fully enjoys what’s next! Thank you Geraldo! Love, peace, health to you!
Has anyone else noticed that the various perfectly nice libs who’ve occupied that 2nd chair on the left over the years seem to have this trait in common? … They don’t seem to “get” edgy humor & can’t be playful with the other 4 in that playground of edgy humor. Regular main steam humor, sure they can mostly hang in there to a level of at least seeming to understand it, but man turn that corner to edginess & it’s like they’re totally lost. Just can’t go to the edgy humor place for some reason I guess. Just a random observation. Weird that it’s all of them (Juan, Geraldo, Jessica, Harold…)
Geraldo, take time to relax, and enjoy your retirement, your family and your travels! You have had quite an impressive career, and you deserve time for you ! Have a Happy and Memorable Birthday 🎉
That seat should go Tom Shillue. But he’s not a lib you say? Well hear me out. Tom takes the seat but does the show, the whole show, as his Joe Biden persona. There you go.
heraldo, 23 years too Late
geraldo
you are biased and going to a dark place where you belong for eternity.
so long..good ridance..i wont miss you or your twisted views take your “stache and exit stage left..go to cnn i herte they are looking for used up celebrities
Great man who did his job
and did it HIS WAY. Professional of the highest degree.
I knew he was a “lefty” but didn’t give a damn. I enjoyed listening to his thoughts. 50 years! Kudows to Geraldo. Will really miss your thoughts . Hey . I think there was spare change in Al’s safe. I watched that and was better than any reality show. Take care and thank you for your reporting and presentation. Hope you come back somewhere to give us your thoughts!
Geraldo’s got balls-in 1990 when “legit” TV hosts shunned NYC cableTV phenom Ugly George (even tho they watched “The Ugly George House of Truth,Sex & Violence” froUm their Liberal-Closets), Geraldo booked me on his CBS talk show & the ratings went thru the roof (as usual when UG was on “Oprah” “Jerry Springer” “Donahue” etc etc). When the Net come along, all the hibrow “experts” wrote that UG was “done” But now so many Biggies have found it useful to keyword to ugly george from Joe Biden on down that there are four billions links there. As soon as uglygeorge.com goes bak up with video-that’s smartTV! Stay tuned…
No way he was terrible.
