WOW Hall Acoustic Picnic - Sunday, July 18
WOW HALL ACOUSTIC PICNIC

On Sunday, July 18, Eugene’s Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly hosts WOW Hall Acoustic Picnic, a free outdoor event in the back parking lot of the WOW Hall.  The event runs from 1:00 to 7:00 pm and features performances by Laura Kemp Trio, Sugar Pine, Kef, Eric Richardson, Mood Area 52 and Dylan and Anthony.

With musical influences that span from folk to bluegrass to jazz to kirtan, Laura Kemp has been captivating Northwest audiences for over 20 years. She has six studio and two live albums under her belt, and has won the Eugene Weekly reader’s poll for Best Local Singer-Songwriter too many times to keep track of. Accompanying herself on guitar, harmonica, and banjo, she is joined by seasoned musicians Jeremy Wegner on mandolin, banjo, and vocals (Sugar Beets, Bindaas, Klezmonauts) and Sean Peterson on upright bass and vocals (Eleven Eyes, U of O jazz ensembles). The trio performs an original mix of bluegrass, folk and jazz that is rich with three-part harmonies, instrumental magic, compelling lyricism, disarming humor, and an infectious musical synergy.  “A true songwriter with a voice and guitar that work together like no other… you know you’re going to be entertained with Laura Kemp.” States Ed Mellnik, Mostly Folk, KZME Portland.

The Sugar Pine band features Eugene musicians who share a love of traditional acoustic music. Fiddle, dobro and mandolin provide the high lonesome tones alongside the upright bass and guitar, with warm vocal harmonies as old as the mountains.  The group is comfortable playing smoking bluegrass instrumentals or a variety of upbeat originals composed by Gabe Schliffer, Sugar Pine's leader and fiddle/cello master.  His unique songwriting spans the gaps between Americana, Folk, Country and Bluegrass, weaving masterful acoustic melodies between lyrics of hope and love. Originally from Upstate New York, Gabe grew up at the Folk Art Guild, an intentional community and organic farm in near Rochester, NY.  His latest album Stargazers, a continuation of his search into the roots of Americana music, features him on cello, fiddle, tenor banjo, guitar and lead vocals.

Kef has been performing traditional East European folk music since 2006.  In 2013, they also began performing as a brass band.  Their repertoire continues to grow.  Band members are Cody Simmons (director, truba, trumpet), Alex Lowe (trumpet), Sarah Ennes (alto saxophone), Sharon Rogers (accordion, tambura, baritone horn, vocals), Nisha Calkins (cello, baritone horn) and Ken Sokolov (tupan, dumbek, drum set).

Mood Area 52 plays Americana influenced by Latin, world and instrumental art music.  Michael Roderick founded MA52 in 1998 as a Piazzola inspired neo-tango ensemble. Since then the group has incorporated Golden Age Tango material, lounge, electronica, Eastern European influences, polyglot vocal material, Brechtian cabaret tunes, chanson, and original compositions about love, loss, genetic mutations, daring women in petticoats, and the ill-hatched crimes of ambitious charlatans.  The band performs acoustically as a duo of accordionist and vocalist Michael Roderick and cellist Amy Danziger, and expands into a quintet, incorporating the talents of guitarist Billy Barnett, bassists Dorian Crow and Jeremiah Harris, and other Oregon musicians. They perform in venues ranging from clubs to festival stages, accompanying burlesque troops and providing original soundtracks to golden age films.

Eric Richardson is probably best known as the four-term President and current Executive Director of the Eugene Springfield NAACP.  Following his father’s legacy in the 1960’s Black Arts Movement as a jazz musician, Eric enjoys playing music and is an avid purveyor of jazz history.

This is a free event to welcome the community back to the WOW Hall (but donations are appreciated).  Food vendors will be on hand but the public is invited to bring a picnic meal of their own.  The WOW Hall is located at the corner of 8th and Lincoln in Eugene and is always open for all ages.  For more information please call 541-687-2746 or visit www.wowhall.org.
