La forza e la ragione, Intervista a Salvador Allende: La forza e la ragione
Reminded of this today as yet another democratically-elected Latin American socialist is deposed by fascists with the backing of international capital and its enforcement arm, the US government. I watched this a couple of years ago but the most striking thing I recall is Allende discussing how he hoped to be independent from the Soviet sphere and reliant on democratic institutions. We see again how that turns out. This interview is of course heartbreaking as it took place soon after Allende assumed the presidency, when the left brimmed with enthusiasm and optimism, and first aired only a few days before his assassination, but it ranges over a variety of topics and Allende demonstrates an erudition and humanism that has all but disappeared from global politics, thanks in no small part to the sorts of people who had him killed.
This interview is a great snapshot of the incredible compassion and sense of justice Salvador Allende had and his willingness to fight for the freedom of Chile from imperialist powers for a more equitable and fair society. A true champion of left unity who genuinely believed in the power that citizens have as seen by his conviction to engage with the working class and stress the importance of political participation and education. It is honestly incredibly heartbreaking to see Allende speak on his views of the relationship between South America and the United States considering the fate that was soon to befall him brought on upon the CIA and the terrible regime that would soon be implemented shortly after his…
It’s a pleasure to hear Allende speak, and reaffirm just how thoroughly he understood the situation in Latin America and its relationship with the United States and other imperialist powers. Essential viewing for those who still subscribe to the American propaganda that imperialism is a myth.
If completing Rossellini's filmography means sitting through 45-minute political interviews then so be it!

One of the most perfectly articulated political platforms I’ve ever seen, he’s the platonic ideal of a politician, absolutely no bullshit. Answers some very difficult questions - i was equal measures impressed and haunted by his response to the United States reaction to nationalization of Chile’s copper industry.
Was he naïve? His answer was clearly politically calculated, I’d be interested in his unguarded perspective
PRESIDENTE
