Ancestral seat of the Guelphs

Pattensen near Hanover is home to the former ancestral seat of the Guelphs, the oldest princely family in Europe – Marienburg Castle. In the middle of the 19th century, King George V of Hanover gave the castle to his wife, Queen Marie. According to legend, it was previously inhabited by dwarves. Although Queen Marie called the neo-Gothic style castle her “little Eldorado”, she was never to actually live there. Shortly before the present monument was completed, King George V was forced into exile in Austria in 1866, where Queen Marie followed him just one year later. Visit the fairytale castle and take a journey back in time to the 19th century.
