What are your thoughts on “Grown Ups” (2010)?

Discussion

I’ve watched this film like a million times, gotten stoned and just jammed out to the bad ass soundtrack. From a storytelling perspective it’s super simple and yeah the jokes are hit and miss but it’s not unwatchable as so many claim it to be. I’m probably in the minority here but I think it tells it’s story in a pretty fun way and is just kind of a reminder of everyone’s “glory days”. So my question is what are YOUR thoughts on this critically bashed movie?

A paid vacation for Adam Sandler and his friends

When I found out that was the reason why Sandler has so many bad movies i couldn't even be mad at him

Grown ups ain’t a bad movie

u/aishazzzzzzz avatar

why does he have so many movies?

He wanted to hang out and make money with his best friends

It's really hard to hate on someone who makes sure all his friends can come too.

I will never hate on him, I just won’t spend my dollars on it

Probably one of my favourite movies tbh. The vibes it brings is great! The boys hanging out together like back in the old days, mixed in with some moments with their wives/kids. Might not be the funniest but I found it very entertaining and visually pleasing to watch. Tbh its something I kind of wish to be able to experience when im older. Rent out a cottage with some friends/family and everyone just enjoying themselves

Very relaxing movie you don't have to pay much attention to since nothing of consequence happens. I wish there were more movies like that with no real plot and stuff just happens for no particular reason, I actually can't think of another one, not even a comedy.

Grown Ups 2?

Not a movie. Just Sandler having a paid vacation with his buddies and filming it.

I like to think there is an alternate universe where Adam Sandler got to make this movie with Chris Farley back in the 90s.

u/Dopamine-dreams avatar

I always get the silent idea one of them is thinking to Kevin, “hey can you just eat another Twinkie, can you just do some blow?” To make more of a Farley replacement

Tbh grown ups reminds me of the kinds of comedy’s you’d get in the 80s, where nothing really happens, but then all of a sudden at the end something does happen.

It’s funny and good if you want to forget what reality actually is for a while.

Garbage movie that seems like it was entirely improvised & nothing of it was written by professional comedians. I remember the first time seeing it thinking it seemed like no planning whatsoever went into it.

u/mikeyfreshh avatar

You're not wrong but I also think that's what a lot of people like about it. Feels like Sandler and the gang just brought some cameras on a real vacation and just filmed themselves dicking around. It's obviously not a cinematic achievement but I do think it's pretty fun and there are a few genuinely funny bits in there.

Made so much more potent by the fact that scenes constantly end completely abruptly

Love it. Easy watching, humourous, and has a little something for everybody. It is a fun movie and it looks like they had fun making it. Maze.

Just watched this. god it was shit

I like Sandler and this movie.

yeah, every post here is about Lynch's trash movies, The Godfather, fight club and Shutter Island

Complete trash, but then again I'm not into comedy movies that much, only watched it cause the wife wanted to. I just can't get into movies like that

It's a very fun movie and I remember when I watched it at the cinema with my family and they loved it too...and when it was released on Blu-ray me and my family watch this every year. We also watched the second movie too although not as good as the first, what we love a lot about the first movie is that all of these actors and actresses within the movie seemed like they were enjoying themselves for real like as though that they are having a real vacation...and in a way they kind of are on a vacation for real but with so much comedy put into this movie which are the best parts. Now this is the part where things will have a big turn...when I checked the ratings score on rottentomatoes.com it had like 10% score out of 100% which made me think WTF...it should have at least 65% score...but yeah to me this just proves that the world is extremely depressed and comedy movies like grown ups just doesn't reflect on these audiences so they instead attend to watch and like depressing movies like 'requiem for a dream', 'Marley and Me', 'A Star is Born', and many other movies like these that are so overrated...and in their spare time they just go on tiktok or social media and make videos or take the same pictures of themselves to show off their bodies just to get the attention they need to feel good simply because they are depressed which is one of the biggest problems in this generation, but yeah this is why so many comedy movies have such bad ratings because it doesn't reflect on the depressed audiences but it only reflect on those who have high spirit and they know what real fun is.

Terrible. Bad jokes. Second hand embarrassment. The wives shouldn't have even been in the movie.

u/Jskidmore1217 avatar

I thinks it’s not great, but underrated anyway. I didn’t think it’s was the bottom of the barrel crap that so many do. I think it was a passable family comedy that is not completely forgettable. Nowhere close to Sandler’s best. Humor is very subjective though- so I understand the disparity in public opinion.

It’s funny. Easy turn off your brain watch and excellent background noise. The best parts were just the five of them shooting the shit

This movie is relatable to every group of friends who enjoy goofing off and joking around with one another. So these people, like myself, see themselves as Adam Sandler's group of friends. The jokes are bad but they make you laugh. It's idiotic, but that's what life is about when you're with friends..joking around, being there for each other, never taking things too serious.

Adam Sandler is a guilty pleasure in general.

He's the Jerry Lewis of his generation (look it up, kids).

He's had had some really noxious films (Little Nickey, Zohan), but his movies are generally good natured ("50 First Dates," "The Wedding Singer") and "Grown Ups" fits in there or dumb fun (The Waterboy) and, yes, he can act too, "Punch Drunk Love," "Uncut Gems."

My favorite Adam Sandler movie is some throwaway Netflix fare about a murder mystery on a boat. I don't even remember what it's called but I remember liking it because Adam Sandler seemed like a normal dude who didn't do baby talk all the time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is like me and hates his serious and comedy movies.

Edit: Looked into his filmography and it's literally called Murder Mystery haha. It's a movie where the wackiness surrounds Sandler instead of Sandler being the main source of the wackiness, and I guess that felt different enough to me.

Beware the film snobs for saying you enjoyed something by him. Apparently I've been downvoted for Sandler analysis. C'est la vie.

One of my guilty pleasure movies. I've seen it a million times and I'll see it a million more.

It's good, not sure why there is hate towards that movie.

I never saw it but love that Sandler makes the dumbest movies clearly just so he can hang out with his buddies.

I don't watch Adam Sandler. I am an adult.

"Switch".

I think it's quite good. It certainly is not a great comedy but I think it is entertaining.

It’s a fine background noise movie but not something serious to watch. Same with the second one.

u/silentsights avatar

Love this movie, it’s def a solid flick with rewatchability

Its a fun brain off movie

Every time I watch grown ups & grown ups 2 when they’re on tv I find them more and more annoying and nauseating. I can’t stand the forced humour, stereotypes and sexist jokes, not to mention the terrible acting (especially by the woman who plays Gloria - UGH). The only real funny part is when Steve Buscemi’s character Wiley goes down the zipline by his feet and smashes into the pool house, resulting in a full body cast with his arms straight up in the air. The rest is lowbrow crap imho…
