I think a pair of walkie talkies that you can pop a sim into and also use as a phone.
My fav BlackBerry of all time was the 8350i Nextel curve.
So back to my idea, When in another country you can call your boss back home and then also be able to walkie-talkie to your buddy who is on-site with u workin in a hole without phone service so the walkie-talkie is key.

I think any company that could sell the "phones" in a pair package and advertise it for business would be a great idea. They could be useful in so many ways. A club where 2 bounces can communicate back and forth and also be able to call the cops for back up.
I say BlackBerry should do it because they are all about saving time and walkie-talkies are so much quicker then phones calls so it only makes sense for BlackBerry to make it happen lol

PTT (push-to-talk, aka Nextel, aka walkie talkie) is dead industry-wide because no one is interested anymore. PTT was created when all phone plans had limited minutes, no or very rudimentary texting, and no cameras - and PTT was unlimited.

Today we can text, send very high-resolution photos, and we can make unlimited calls (and even conference in multiple people). No one wants to deal with one-way walkie talkies and loud chirps all the time anymore. That ended in the early 2000s - about 15 years ago.

My last company couldn't get over it, even subscribed to Verizon's weak attempt at PTT back in the late 2000's. BlackBerry's were great as they had the convenience key that could be used with it... but it didn't really work and everyone moved on an got more into BBM. (Just as BBM usage was fading)

PTT is different because it's a phone first with a walkie-talkie option and not really a dedicated walkie-talkie because you still need a signal from a cell tower . real walkie-talkies work on a different type of signal and hence it would be good in a different places mostly WORK . This wouldn't be a phone but more of a walkie-talkie with a phone option for people who need to make a phone call. PTT is a phone that people use as a walkie-talkie. I'm talking about a walkie-talkie on a construction site that people could use as a phone (option). Walkie-talkie is the best at fast communication. If I have a leaking pump I a need immediate communication no dialing no wait time. BlackBerry is about saving time and also more about the business sector

I really miss the PTT feature of my Curve. My brother and I used to use it a lot to exchange quick quips to each other during the day. It was fun.
I would love to see BBMo bring it back to a KEY model and a VKB model. I would take the Key version and my wife the vkb.

Tat also works like PTT. It needs WiFi or cellular. I'm talking about a real Motorola walkie-talkie that works with its own signal not WiFi. If u were overseas on a jobsite and it's new construction I doubt I will have a WiFi connection and if I use the LTE cellular tower the call will be expensive. I need a walkie-talkie I can use for work without connection issues. I need the sim card to call the Boss back in America to let him know everything is OK. I wouldn't necessarily use it to call my Co worker on the jobsite downstairs, I'd have the walkie-talkie as an option. It would be sold in a pair and u can put an international sim in it. Have not seen it yet. What u showed was for kids. I think it's definitely awesome for my child thanks for that link.

So, a mediocre two-way radio and a crappy cellphone rolled into one very expensive device? This wouldn’t even sell well in the niche you’re targeting.

As I said, the need for this kind of device as shrunk to the point where it's not viable to serve that niche. WAY too few people are interested in this kind of functionality, given the alternatives that are available today. Again, why do you need a walkie talkie when you can just call? And if you don't have cell signal, then a Nextel-type device wouldn't help you anyway.

For those who don't know, the first several generations of Nextel devices were ONLY walkie talkies - they couldn't make phone calls. They were big, rugged walkies manufactured by Motorola and very similar in size and construction to Moto's commercial walkies. I'm well aware of what the OP is asking for - he's just 20 years late to the party, that ended long ago.

Just had a little hurricane here where I live....lot's of folks were talking about Zello.

For some reason they "taught" it would work without some kind of WiFi or Cell Data... it didn't.

oh boy, that is why I still keep a pair of Uniden GMR 1038 2way radio somewhere in my room... PTT in handsets currently just something like zello. (BBOS used to be knight of shinning armer during those days when cell is limited due to server and data compression... but not anymore... once the cell/wifi out, you just got dead weight in your hand).

Until relatively recently they were still selling the more modern Nextel-style iDEN standard on U.S. phone provider SouthernLinc which also has iDEN/WiDEN mobile standard like Nextel or MIKE in Canada. The Nextel phones were good because they were more rugged which is a NICHE market you cannot find much anymore in the store, namely phones you can drop, and step on by accident or have a track run over by accident on a worksite and still be fine.
