Shoot days in all four quarters last year were also down for the genre compared with 2022, per FilmLA. Many veteran unscripted producers and sellers say the downturn is mirroring what’s happening in the scripted TV space, as well.  Full story.

NHL Heats Up the Ice

The NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs have been up across the board so far this year. The Eastern Conference finals averaged about 2.2 million viewers through the first three games on ESPN and ABC, up by more than 40 percent from both of last year’s conference championships. (Having the New York Rangers, who play in the country’s biggest media market, in the series doesn’t hurt). The Western Conference finals on TNT Sports are also performing solidly, and the first two rounds averaged 1.16 million viewers across both ESPN/ABC and TNT, TBS and TruTV, a 9 percent improvement on the 2023 playoffs.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Netflix’s Latest Trove

On May 23, Netflix released another huge batch of data about the time users spent with the service, and the top of its series list demonstrates how wide its global reach is. The No. 1 series for the second half of 2023, as measured by Netflix’s view metric (total viewing hours divided by running time), was One Piece, a U.S.-Japanese co-production based on the popular manga and anime series. Details.

Disney Leads TV Viewing

New data from Nielsen shows that Disney grabs the biggest share of TV viewing among all media companies in the United States — and has for the past six months. In addition to its monthly Gauge rankings of viewing by platform (streaming, cable and broadcast), Nielsen is also providing a monthly look at TV usage by media company. The ratings provider is calling it the Media Distributor Gauge. Details.
