Between America’s affection for trucks and SUVs and manufacturers continuing to develop smaller, more efficient engines, the future looks a bit worrying for the V8-powered sedan. But the future will have to wait a bit longer because there is still a tempting selection of powerful V8 sedans you can by in 2024. With a lower seating position, sleeker styling, and better performance than a comparable V8-powered SUV, these sedans have much to offer. Our list includes some 2023 models that continue to be sold in 2024 and a few cars that stretch the conventional definition of a sedan with their coupe-like body styles. Vehicles are ranked based on their BuzzScore, which is assigned by our expert test drivers.

Vehicles are assigned a BuzzScore in relation to their direct segment competitors, and as such, vehicles in this list, while similarly scored, do not necessarily compete directly against one another. Find out more about how the BuzzScore ratings work here.

2024 Audi S8

2024 Audi S8
Base MSRP
$123,400
Engine
4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 Gas
Horsepower
563 hp
Fuel Economy
15/24 MPG

With a BuzzScore of 9.4 out of 10, the Audi S8 is as close to a flawless V8-powered sedan as it gets. In typical Audi fashion, the S8 isn’t the quickest or flashiest sedan of its kind, but the spread of its capabilities impresses us so much. For $120,500, the S8 generates 563 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque from its 4.0-liter turbocharged V8. With quattro all-wheel drive grip, it surges to 60 mph in only 3.8 seconds. It also has less brash styling than its BMW 7 Series rival, which many feel is more appropriate for the full-size luxury sedan segment. While its performance is sporty, it’s also exceptionally comfortable with its optional predictive active suspension, as we found when testing it recently.

Even though the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class are newer than the S8, the Audi is the most entertaining and most comfortable of the three.

2024 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe

2024 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe (M850i xDrive)
MSRP
$106,300
Engine
4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 Gas
Horsepower
523 hp
Torque
553 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm

You may have expected our highest-rated BMW V8 sedan to be the 7 Series, but it’s the much more beautiful 8 Series Gran Coupe that scores 9.3 out of 10, just below the Audi. The coupe-like styling of the Gran Coupe is especially dashing, and there’s enough space at the back - it’s not as good as the 7 Series for rear passengers, though. The refined powertrains won’t attract any complaints, although you’ll have to hand over a six-figure sum to enjoy the 523-hp V8 in the M850i. This model will hit 60 in well under four seconds. It’s also very comfortable and handles well for its weight and size.

2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 580 4MATIC Sedan
MSRP
$128,150
Engine
4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 Gas
Horsepower
496 hp
Torque
516 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm

Another fine addition to this German-dominated list is the indomitable S-Class. To gain access to a V8-powered S-Class, you need to spend $128,150 on the S580. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with mild hybrid assistance produces 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. The brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission are standard. Although the base six-cylinder S500 is barely slower, a V8 still feels appropriate for Merc’s stately luxury sedan. It perfectly complements the sedan’s plush ride and gorgeously trimmed cabin to make this one of the most relaxing driving experiences in its segment.

2024 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe

2024 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe
Base MSRP
$149,300
Engine
4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 Gas
Horsepower
612 hp
Fuel Economy
17/24 MPG

If the M850i Gran Coupe 523-hp output sounds too little, another V8-powered Gran Coupe is on the menu. The Alpina B8 produces 612 hp, cutting the 0-60 time down to just 3.3 seconds. In typical Alpina style, the B8 is stealthier than the equivalent M car (M8 Gran Coupe); it’s probably the most stylish of the Gran Coupes. It also drives beautifully and makes for a magnificent cruiser. For that privilege, you need to pay around $149k for this V8-powered BMW, making it over $40,000 more expensive than the M850i. It’s hard to make a logical case for that price difference on paper, but if you can stretch to it, this is the more exclusive car. Alpina has historically given BMW fans M-level performance with a plush ride quality, and the B8 Gran Coupe continues that tradition, which is why it places above the next car on the list...
